Hello! Who am I speaking to? Alô? Com quem eu falo? Há alguns meses, nós aprendemos aqui no blog algumas palavras e termos relacionados ao uso de telefones em inglês. Hoje, nós vamos dar um passo adiante e ver phrasal verbs empregados durante ligações telefônicas. Embora seja inegável que o serviço de mensagens de texto seja cada vez mais popular entre usuários, às vezes só uma ligação é capaz de resolver nossos problemas, não é mesmo? Veja abaixo, então, uma lista dos phrasal verbs mais comuns para se comunicar pelo telefone:

to be cut off: to have the phone call interrupted (ligação cortada)

• The supplier was discussing the contract with the costumer when they were suddenly cut off | O fornecedor estava discutindo o contrato com o cliente quando a ligação foi cortada de repente
• I apologize, my phone ran out of credit and we got cut off | Peço desculpas, meu telefone ficou sem crédito e a ligação foi cortada

to hang on: to wait for a short period of time (aguardar)

• Could you hang on for a moment while I grab a pen to write it down? | Você poderia aguardar por um momento enquanto eu pego uma caneta para anotar?
• Please hang on, I will check if the doctor is available to talk to you now | Por favor, aguarde, vou verificar se o médico está disponível para falar com você agora

to pick up: to answer a telephone call (atender)

• I have been calling the company all day long but nobody is picking up | Eu liguei para a empresa o dia todo, mas ninguém está atendendo.
• Why isn’t Nick picking up my phone calls? Do you think he might be avoiding me? | Por que Nick não atende minhas ligações? Você acha que ele pode estar me evitando?

to get through: to be able to contact (entrar em contato)

• I haven’t been able to get through to Jess. Maybe she gave me wrong number | Eu não consegui falar com a Jess. Talvez ela tenha me dado o número errado
• The line was busy, so I couldn’t get through | A linha estava ocupada, então eu não consegui entrar em contato

to break up: to have problems listening to the person on the other line (ligação falhando)

• Ever since I switched my provider, my phone calls keep breaking up | Desde que mudei de operadora, meus telefonemas ficam falhando
• Can you repeat, please? The signal is weak and you are breaking up | Você pode repetir por favor? O sinal está fraco e a ligação está falhando

to hang up: to end a phone conversation (desligar)

• Don’t hang up, yet, Miss! Don’t you want to hear our special offers for your plan? | Não desligue, ainda, senhorita! Você não quer ouvir nossas ofertas especiais para o seu plano?
• I’m going to hang up because the meeting is about to start. We’ll talk later. Bye | Vou desligar porque a reunião está prestes a começar. Nos falamos depois. Tchau
