If <\/em>e whether <\/em>significam “se”. If <\/em>\u00e9 usado em ora\u00e7\u00f5es condicionais (se eu fizer algo, acontecer\u00e1 algo, etc.) e whether <\/em>\u00e9 usado quando o “se” tem fun\u00e7\u00e3o disjuntiva, ou seja, expressa d\u00favida se acontecer\u00e1 uma coisa ou outra. Vejamos alguns exemplos:<\/p>\n

If <\/strong>you study, you’ll pass your test.<\/em> – Se voc\u00ea estudar, voc\u00ea passar\u00e1 no seu teste.
\nWhat would you do if <\/strong>you won the lottery? <\/em>– O que voc\u00ea faria se ganhasse na loteria?
\nI don’t know whether <\/strong>she studies French or German. <\/em>– N\u00e3o sei se ela estuda franc\u00eas ou alem\u00e3o.
\nHe was in doubt whether <\/strong>to eat fish or meat. <\/em>– Ele estava em d\u00favida se comia peixe ou carne.<\/p>\n

Na linguagem informal, quando o “se” tem fun\u00e7\u00e3o disjuntiva e a segunda parte da frase fica subentendida, \u00e9 comum usar if <\/em>em vez de whether<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I don’t know if <\/strong>she went to the bank.<\/em> – N\u00e3o sei se ela foi ao banco (ou n\u00e3o).
\nI can’t remember if <\/strong>I paid the bill.<\/em> – N\u00e3o me lembro se paguei a conta (ou n\u00e3o).
\nCan you guess if <\/strong>it’s going to rain? <\/em>– Voc\u00ea consegue adivinhar se vai chover (ou n\u00e3o)?
\nDo you know if <\/strong>they like sushi? <\/em>– Voc\u00ea sabe se eles gostam de sushi (ou n\u00e3o)?<\/p>\n

Lembre-se de que quando o “se” \u00e9 disjuntivo, o correto mesmo \u00e9 usar whether<\/em>.<\/p>\n
