How\u2019s it going? I hope you\u2019re all doing fine!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hoje vamos aprender algumas express\u00f5es idiom\u00e1ticas contidas numa pequena hist\u00f3ria que vou ler agora. Escute, leia o texto. Depois explicarei as express\u00f5es.<\/p>\n<p><em>Last week my friend Janet invited me out. I insisted to pay for the meal but she said it was on her. I suggested splitting it but she said she was going to treat me and that\u2019s that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We got to the coffee shop and the line was really long. All of a sudden this guy cuts in line and that drove Janet crazy. Well, it was a good thing we weren\u2019t in a hurry but I can\u2019t believe people act like that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We ordered one chicken sandwich, one hamburger, two small fries and two cokes. The counterperson asked, \u201cIs that for here or to go?\u201d. I said it was for here and we sat down to eat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Janet asked me about our friend John, if I knew what he was up to these days. I told her he had gone back to college because he\u2019d dropped out two years ago. She said it was about time because without a college diploma he couldn\u2019t do anything. I also told her he had quit smoking, cold turkey, because his doctor said that if he kept on smoking and didn\u2019t go on a diet, he could have a heart attack. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bom, vamos come\u00e7ar com a leitura do texto novamente e com as explica\u00e7\u00f5es das express\u00f5es. Semana passada, minha amiga Janeta <em>invited me out<\/em>, ou seja, ela me convidou pra sair. <em>To invite someone out<\/em> significa convidar algu\u00e9m para sair. \u00c9 uma express\u00e3o muito usada com amigos. Agora se voc\u00ea convida algu\u00e9m para sair, com inten\u00e7\u00f5es amorosas, use a express\u00e3o <em>ask someone out<\/em>. Exemplo:<em> I asked Julie out on a date.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Eu insisti em pagar mas a Janet disse que <em>it was on her<\/em>, que era por conta dela, ela ia pagar a conta. A express\u00e3o \u00e9 <em>It\u2019s on me!<\/em> \u00c9 por minha conta! Sugeri dividir a conta, <em>split the bill<\/em> ou <em>split it<\/em>, mas ela disse que ia <em>treat me<\/em>, ou seja , pagar minha parte and<em> that\u2019s that<\/em>, e ponto final.<\/p>\n<p>Quando chegamos \u00e0 lanchonete a fila estava enorme e de repente um cara<em> cuts in line<\/em>, corta a fila e isso deixou a Janet louca, <em>it drove Janet crazy<\/em>. Muitas coisas <em>drive me crazy<\/em>, como por exemplo pessoas que jogam papel na rua, e n\u00e3o no cesto de lixo.<\/p>\n<p>Depois que fizemos o pedido, o balconista, <em>the counterperson<\/em>, perguntou se era <em>for here or to go<\/em>. Ele quis dizer se eu ia comer l\u00e1 ou levar para comer em  casa. <em>For here<\/em>, eu disse.<\/p>\n<p>Janet e eu temos um amigo, o John, e eu perguntei o que o John andava fazendo atualmente. A pergunta que eu usei foi, <em>\u201cWhat\u2019s John been up to these days?\u201d<\/em> e quando voc\u00ea quer perguntar para algu\u00e9m o que essa pessoa tem feito, use a pergunta <em>\u201cWhat are you up?\u201d<\/em> ou <em>\u201cWhat have you been up to?<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>John tinha abandonado a faculdade dois anos atr\u00e1s,<em> he had dropped out of college<\/em>, mas tinha voltado a estudar e Janet disse que j\u00e1 era hora de ele voltar a estudar,<em> it was about time he went back to college<\/em>, pois sem diploma n\u00e3o se vai a lugar algum.<\/p>\n<p>Outra novidade foi que ele parou de fumar, <em>he quit smoking <\/em>ou <em>gave up smoking<\/em>. E parou de fumar de vez, n\u00e3o devagar. A express\u00e3o <em>cold turkey<\/em> indica isso, quando paramos de fazer algo abruptamente, geralmente um v\u00edcio ou algo ruim. O John <em>quit smoking<\/em> porque corria o risco de ter um <em>heart attack<\/em>, um infarto!<\/p>\n<p><em>That\u2019s all for today people!
