Continuing with our music theme (téama ceoil), let’s look at páirteanna na fidle (or “páirteanna an veidhlín“).  Some are quite similar in Irish and English (scrolla, mar shampla), but in some cases, the Irish is well, distinctively Irish, like “eireaballán.”

So here are the parts.  Can you match them up with what’s in the graphic above?   Freagraí and aistriúcháin, as usual, are thíos.

Freagraíodh Uimhir a hAon cheana féin.  Number One has been answered already.

An cheist is mó?  Cá bhfuil an lipéad Stradivarius?

An seinneann tú an fhidil?  Má sheinneann, ar mhaith leat insint dúinn cén sórt fidle atá agat (Stradivarius?) nó cad é an ceol nó an tiúin is fearr leat?

Do you play the fiddle?  If so, would you like to tell us what kind of fiddle you have (Stradivarius?) or what music or what tune you like the best?

Hope you found this fun and useful.  Slán go fóill — Róislín

 Freagraí agus aistriúcháin:

__13__   babhta íochtair, lower bout

__9__     babhta uachtair, upper bout

__3__     cnó, nut (separates the scroll from the fingerboard)

__10__   coim, waist

__7__     corp, body

__12__   droichead, bridge

__16__   eireaballán, tailpiece (based on eireaball, tail, often written as just “ruball”)

__11__   f-phoill, f-holes

__8__     fuaimchrann, soundpost (dofheicthe ón uillinn seo; invisible from this angle); lit. “sound-tree”

__4__     méarchlár, fingerboard

__14__   *miontiúnóirí , fine tuners (* = neamhfhianaithe — ní fheicim an focal seo in áit ar bith ar an Idirlíon ach sílim go bhfuil an comhfhocal nuachumtha seo loighiciúil.  Aon bharúil eile?  Unattested — I don’t see this word anywhere on the Internet but I think the newly composed compound word is logical.)

__6__    pionnabhosca, pegbox (remember, lenition of the second part of a compound word)

__2__    pionnaí tiúnála, tuning pegs

__1__    scrolla, scroll

__15__   taca smige, chin rest; lit. “support of chin”

__5__    téada, strings

Cad é an t-aon rud amháin nach bhfuil ar an liosta seo?  Do lámh ag seinm na fidle!  What is the one thing that is not on this list?  Your hand playing the fiddle!  And remember “fidle” is the genitive case of “fidil” in Irish — it’s not a misspelling of “fiddle”!
