How many holidays or festivals or special event days can you name for February?\u00a0 And how many can you name in Irish?<\/p>\n

Today’s blogpost offers a list of dates (liosta d\u00e1ta\u00ed<\/strong>) for February \u00a0with columns for the names of the event or holiday in English and space to write the Irish name.\u00a0 \u00a0The challenge will be to translate from English to Irish, and to match the holiday to the date.\u00a0 Some will be quite predictable, like Valentine’s Day, but others might be more challenging, especially those with the much-maligned but very useful tuiseal ginideach<\/strong> (genitive case).<\/p>\n

Mar is gn\u00e1ch, t\u00e1 na freagra\u00ed th\u00edos<\/strong>.\u00a0 As usual, the answers are below. \u00a0For no. 2, please do note that the Irish is a lot longer than the usual English (which is just one word). \u00a0\u00a0Also, for the non-traditional\u00a0 events, like National Pistachio Day (!), I’ve created the Irish translation (marked with an asterisk) and as far as I know, they’re not documented anywhere else.\u00a0 But it’s all good vocabulary practice!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Day of Saint Valentine).\u00a0 (NB: lenition of “f\u00e9ile<\/strong>” to say “of” the feastday),<\/p>\n

6)) L\u00e1 na nUachtar\u00e1n,<\/strong> Presidents’ Day, in the US (NB: genitive case marked by the lower-case “n-” prefix),<\/p>\n

7)) *L\u00e1 N\u00e1isi\u00fanta Meall\u00e1n Guma<\/strong>, National Gumdrop Day, BTW, “gumdrops” are primarily an American candy, similar to “guma\u00ed f\u00edona<\/strong>” (“wine-gums” in Ireland and the UK), but the American gumdrop also has a sugar coating.<\/p>\n

8)) \u00a0*L\u00e1 ‘Imir Lead\u00f3g’,<\/strong> ‘Play Tennis’ Day.\u00a0 Since “Imir Lead\u00f3g<\/strong>” is a command, there’s no need to change the word “lead\u00f3g<\/strong>” from its root form.\u00a0 “Lead\u00f3ige<\/strong>” would be used in phrases like “ag imirt lead\u00f3ige<\/strong>” (playing tennis) or “cluiche lead\u00f3ige<\/strong>” (a game of tennis)<\/p>\n

9)) *L\u00e1 N\u00e1isi\u00fanta na gCn\u00f3nna Piost\u00e1ise<\/strong>, National Pistachio Day and *L\u00e1 Domhanda na gCn\u00f3nna Piost\u00e1ise<\/strong> (World Pistachio Day).\u00a0 Irish tends to specify “nut” (cn\u00f3<\/strong>) with most types of nuts, even ones for which “nut” is optional in English, like pistachios (cn\u00f3nna piost\u00e1ise<\/strong>) or pecans (cn\u00f3nna peac\u00e1in<\/strong>).\u00a0 Since “piost\u00e1ise<\/strong>” here serves as an adjective to modify “cn\u00f3nna<\/strong>,” no changes are necessary to the word.\u00a0 “Cn\u00f3nna<\/strong>,” though, has become “gcn\u00f3nna<\/strong>“, with the “g” pronounced but the “c” silent.\u00a0 This is\u00a0 because we’re saying “of nuts” and the plural noun takes eclipsis (with “c” changing to “gc”)<\/p>\n
