Here are some of the vocabulary words to accompany the most recent blog (nasc th\u00edos<\/strong>) and some practice for each one.\u00a0 Watch out for all the small changes that happen in Irish: initial consonant mutation, genitive case endings, plural endings, etc.\u00a0 Remember that a lot of these phrases have the word “of” in the English but the Irish doesn’t include a word for “of.”\u00a0 Instead, it makes small changes to the beginning and\/or end of some words, and occasionally a little change in the middle as well!\u00a0 Freagra\u00ed th\u00edos, mar is gn\u00e1ch.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1)) 1 Feabhra<\/em>: f\u00e9ile<\/strong>, feast-day (of a saint).\u00a0 an __ __\u00e9ile<\/strong> (the feast-day). L\u00e1 \u00a0__ __\u00e9ile Br\u00edde <\/strong>(St. Bridget’s Day), and for additional practice: L\u00e1 \u00a0__ __\u00e9ile P\u00e1draig<\/strong> (St. Patrick’s Day)<\/p>\n

2)) 2 Feabhra<\/em>: coinneal<\/strong>, candle; coinnle<\/strong>, candles, but coinn__ __ __<\/strong>\u00a0 for “of candles.” L\u00e1 Fh\u00e9ile Muire na gCoinn__ __ __<\/strong>, Candlemas, lit. (The) Feast Day of Mary of the Candles<\/p>\n

5) 14 Feabhra<\/em><\/strong>: L\u00e1 Fh\u00e9ile Va__lint__ __, <\/strong>Valentine’s Day <\/strong>(Just some slight spelling changes for the Irish version of the name Valentine).\u00a0 Also L\u00e1 Va__lint__ __ <\/strong>and sometimes, L\u00e1 San Va__lint__ __<\/strong><\/p>\n

6)) 15 Feabhra (S.A.M.<\/em>): meall\u00e1n<\/strong>, little ball, lump, or mass, a diminutive of “meall<\/strong>.” Plural: “meall\u00e1in<\/strong>,” little balls, lumps, or masses, but “meall__n<\/strong>” for “of little balls, lumps, or masses.” \u00a0*L\u00e1 N\u00e1isi\u00fanta Meall__n Guma<\/strong>, National Gumdrop Day, lit. National Day of Little Lumps of Gum.\u00a0 But remember, this isn’t “guma coganta<\/strong>” (chewing gum) as such but an American chewy candy, similar to “guma\u00ed f\u00edona<\/strong>” (“wine-gums” in Ireland and the UK), but with a sugar coating (brat si\u00facra<\/strong>)<\/p>\n
