From the decorative (tassels or streamers) to the practical (puncture repair kit), let’s look at some Irish words for bicycle accessories, continuing the t\u00e9ama rotha\u00edochta<\/strong> we’ve been working on for the last few posts (naisc th\u00edos<\/strong>).\u00a0 As you can see, the words are presented as a little matching game.<\/p>\n

By the way, if you’re quite new to Irish, you may not have learned “roth<\/strong>” yet, but it means “wheel” and is the basis for rothar, rotha\u00edocht, rothlaigh<\/strong> (rotate), rothlach<\/strong> (rotary), rothl\u00fach\u00e1n<\/strong> (rotation), and many related compound words or phrases (such as rothmhol, rothdhiosca, inneall rothlach, roth criad\u00f3ra, roth\u00e1n loine<\/strong>, which mean, in sequence,\u00a0 “water-mill wheel,” “wheel-disc,” “rotary engine,” “potter’s wheel,” and, my favorite, “perforated cup of a churn-dash” — an-\u00fas\u00e1ideach inniu!<\/strong>).\u00a0 In some future blog, we’ll look at an alternate word for “bicycle,” which is not based on “roth<\/strong>” at all, but which is simply a gaelicization of the sound of the English word – badhsacal<\/strong>.\u00a0 Remember the “-adh” is basically like an English\u00a0“long i” sound, as in “bite” or “kite.”<\/p>\n

    8., bobail\u00edn<\/strong>, tassel (3), also means a “bobble,” as on a hat, usually woolen, and can also mean “a tuft” or a “pompom,” although the latter is usually “pompom” these days.<\/p>\n

    9., sc\u00e1th\u00e1n c\u00fail<\/strong>\/sc\u00e1th\u00e1n siar<\/strong>, rear-view mirror. “c\u00fail” is literally “of back” and “siar” is literally “back, westward”<\/p>\n

    10., brat s\u00e1bh\u00e1la \/ bratach sh\u00e1bh\u00e1la<\/strong>, safety flag, both literally meaning “flag of saving”<\/p>\n

    and the “ceann breise<\/strong>,” which was “puncture repair kit,” is “fearas deisithe poil<\/strong>l” (lit. kit of repairing of hole) .<\/p>\n

    “Oiri\u00faint\u00ed<\/strong>” is an interesting word in and of itself.\u00a0 In the singular, it can mean “suitability” or “fittingness” and as a verbal noun, “suiting,” “fitting” or “becoming.” \u00a0\u00a0In the plural it can mean “accessories,” as used here, or “fittings” as in “oiri\u00faint\u00ed pr\u00e1is<\/strong>” (brass fittings)<\/p>\n
