little more practice might be welcome.\u00a0 The graphic above shows a variety of combinations of place names, Irish and non-Irish, and the changes that occur when you use the word \u201cin\u201d with the place names.\u00a0 Remember, the word \u201cin\u201d has five variations in Irish:<strong> i, in, sa, san, sna<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s a selection, picked carefully so some start with vowel, some with lenitable consonants, some with non-lenitable consonants, some with the definite article (\u201cthe\u201d) as part of the place name.\u00a0 All of those features can make a difference in how you actually say the phrase. \u00a0\u00a0Can you fill in the \u201c<strong>leagan B\u00e9arla<\/strong>\u201d?\u00a0 Are any of them actually your own \u201c<strong>\u00e1it bhreithe<\/strong>\u201d?\u00a0 The far right-hand column is just a reminder of the change that has taken place.\u00a0 <strong>Freagra\u00ed th\u00edos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, I\u2019ve stuck to the dialect of Irish I\u2019ve learned, for some of these forms.\u00a0 Putting two different types of changes in for some of these names would be too complicated graphically and would take up too much space.\u00a0 But, of course, one can also say \u201c<strong>sa gCloch\u00e1n Liath<\/strong>\u201d (although I doubt a Donegal speaker would, since \u201c<strong>s\u00e9imhi\u00fa<\/strong>\u201d interesting observation about Irish place names is that no matter how many there are that actually start with \u201cBally\u2026\u201d in English, there are even more that have \u201c<strong>Baile<\/strong>\u201d in Irish, but not \u201cBally\u201d in English.\u00a0 As you can see, this is true for Athenry, Ardee, and Athlone, and there are plenty of others.<\/p>\n<p>As for the Irish for Dublin, being \u201c<strong>Baile \u00c1tha Cliath<\/strong>,\u201d that one\u2019s sort of a saga unto itself, but suffice it to say that the \u201c<strong>baile<\/strong>\u201d of \u201c<strong>Baile \u00c1tha Cliath<\/strong>\u201d doesn\u2019t become \u201cbally\u201d in English.\u00a0 We\u2019re looking at two completely different names for the same place here.\u00a0 The \u201ctown (<strong>baile<\/strong>) of the ford (<strong>\u00e1tha<\/strong>) of the hurdle (<strong>cliath<\/strong>)\u201d vs. the \u201cdark (<strong>dubh<\/strong>) pool
