Our last blog dealt with places names like Ceanada <\/strong>and C\u00faba, <\/strong>which take \u201cur\u00fa,\u201d <\/strong>and additional place names like Meicsiceo <\/strong>or Sasana, <\/strong>which are not subject to \u201cur\u00fa\u201d <\/strong>because of the letters they happen to start with.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As you may recall, the \u201cur\u00fa\u201d <\/strong>examples work like this:<\/strong><\/p>\n

T\u00e1 s\u00e9 ina ch\u00f3na\u00ed i gCeanada.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

T\u00e1 m\u00e9 ar saoire i bhFids\u00ed. <\/strong><\/p>\n

If the first letter happens not to take \u201cur\u00fa,\u201d <\/strong>then, as, for example, the letters \u201cm\u201d and \u201cs,\u201d there\u2019s no change at all (for a change!):<\/p>\n

Ph\u00e9inte\u00e1il Diego Rivera m\u00farmhaisithe i Meirice\u00e1 (sna cathracha Detroit, Nua-Eabhrac, agus San Francisco) agus i Meicsiceo (sna cathracha Cathair Mheicsiceo agus Cuernavaca, agus sa bhaile Chapingo).\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

For the rest of this blog, we\u2019ll deal with place names that happen to begin with vowels and which do not use the definite article (i.e., <\/strong>not An Astr\u00e1il, An \u00c9igipt, srl., <\/strong>which will have to wait till we deal with place names including the word \u201cthe\u201d).<\/p>\n

Good news?\u00a0 Place names beginning with vowels are pretty straightforward.\u00a0 Our preposition \u201ci\u201d <\/strong>changes to \u201cin,\u201d <\/strong>making it look more like the English word \u201cin.\u201d\u00a0 No harm there, though it\u2019s important to remember that the basic form is still just the single letter\u201ci.\u201d\u00a0 <\/strong>As mentioned in an earlier blog, these phrases used to be written with the \u201cn\u201d attached to the following word, like \u201ci nAmstardam\u201d <\/strong>or \u201ci n\u00c9irinn,\u201d <\/strong>but that is no longer the norm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here are some examples, again with a little breakaway from the \u201cT\u00e1 m\u00e9 i mo ch\u00f3na\u00ed\u201d <\/strong>pattern.\u00a0 Italics are used here to draw attention to the place name usage.<\/strong><\/p>\n

T\u00e1 teach Anne Frank in Amstardam<\/em>. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Labhra\u00edonn cuid de na daoine in Eacuad\u00f3r<\/em> Ceatsuais.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Rugadh Bob Marley in Iam\u00e1ice<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1)T\u00e1 c\u00f3na\u00ed ar \u201cNiseag\u201d in Albain<\/em>, de r\u00e9ir traidisi\u00fain.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2) T\u00e1 \u201cMucky\u201d ina c(h)\u00f3na\u00ed in \u00c9irinn<\/em>, i Loch Mhucrois i gContae Chiarra\u00ed (de r\u00e9ir traidisi\u00fain, ar\u00eds).\u00a0 Inscne Mucky, duine ar bith?\u00a0 *Criptea-ainmh\u00ed baineann?\u00a0 Fireann?\u00a0 Ina c\u00f3na\u00ed?\u00a0 Ina ch\u00f3na\u00ed? <\/strong><\/p>\n
