The seanfhocail<\/strong> not only teach vocabulary and sentence structure, but they\u2019re often also fun (N\u00ed h\u00e9 l\u00e1 na gaoithe l\u00e1 na scolb<\/strong>), pithy (M\u00e1s mian leat c\u00e1ineadh \u2013 p\u00f3s;\u00a0m\u00e1s mian leat moladh <\/strong>— f\u00e1igh b\u00e1s<\/strong>), pleasantly alliterative (N\u00e1 ceannaigh muc i m\u00e1la<\/strong>), witty (Cuir s\u00edoda ar ghabhar ach is gabhar i gc\u00f3na\u00ed \u00e9<\/strong>), and\/or internationally understood (Is glas iad na cnoic i bhfad uainn<\/strong>).<\/p>\n Last time, to make the proverbs more challenging, we didn\u2019t just list them, but we wrote them as \u201cfill-in-the-blank\u201d exercises, with a \u201cbanc focal<\/strong>\u201d (word bank), of course. \u00a0 Without a word bank, the choice of vocabulary would just be too broad. There isn\u2019t any hearth like your own hearth.<\/p>\n As for that \u201cfocal breise<\/strong>\u201d in the word bank, \u201cshr\u00f3n<\/strong>\u201d (nose), it\u2019s from this proverb: Is minic a bhris b\u00e9al duine a shr\u00f3n <\/strong>(It\u2019s often that a person\u2019s mouth broke his nose).
