Last time we looked at different foods (bianna \u00e9ags\u00fala<\/strong>) that hamsters can and can\u2019t eat and practiced the Irish vocabulary for 35 different edible items (nasc th\u00edo<\/strong>s\/link below). This time we\u2019ll look at those same foods and determine if they are \u201cNeam-neam!<\/strong>\u201d or \u201cUch!<\/strong>\u201d Of course, there could be a third category, foods that might taste good but not be safe or healthy for hamsters. But we\u2019ll stick to the tasty vs. yucky, since, not being a hamster, I can\u2019t really tell which foods they would like to eat but which are forbidden!<\/p>\n

To make the d\u00fashl\u00e1n<\/strong> [say: DOO-hlawn] a little more rigorous, we\u2019ll take each food item and use the phrase \u201cthe taste of \u2026\u201d or \u201cthe taste of the \u2026.\u201d, i nGaeilge, ar nd\u00f3igh, ag \u00fas\u00e1id an fhocail \u201cblas.\u201d<\/strong> That will require using \u201can tuiseal ginideach<\/strong>,\u201d a special form of a noun, which has two main functions in language. One is to show possession (like \u201cc\u00f3ta an fhir<\/strong>,\u201d the man\u2019s coat, with \u201cfhir<\/strong>\u201d instead of \u201cfear<\/strong>,\u201d man). The second is to say \u201cof\/of the,\u201d even when possession as such isn\u2019t involved, such as \u201cdoras oifig<\/strong>e\u201d (an office door\/a door of an office, with \u201coifige<\/strong>\u201d instead of just \u201coifig<\/strong>\u201d or \u201cag buachailleacht na mb\u00f3<\/strong>,\u201d herding the cows, lit. \u201cat herding of the cows,\u201d with \u201cmb\u00f3<\/strong>\u201d [say: “moh”] instead of just \u201cb\u00f3<\/strong>\u201d). \u00a0 For our 35 food terms today, there will be a variety of \u201ctuiseal ginideach<\/strong>\u201d endings, and some prefixes, and maybe a vowel change or two. Oh, by the way, did I say, \u201cwe\u2019ll\u201d do this? \u00a0 Really, I mean \u201cyou\u2019ll,\u201d or at least you\u2019ll<\/em> fill in the answers and I\u2019ll provide the answers in an answer key below. So here\u2019s the list of foods, with space to fill in the phrase \u201cblas an ____\u201d or \u201cblas na _____\u201d,<\/strong> as needed. \u00a0 The food item in its basic form is in parentheses. The English is provided in the answer key.<\/p>\n

The foods the hamster can<\/em> eat are in the \u201cIs f\u00e9idir<\/strong>\u201d (can\/possible) group and the foods the hamster shouldn\u2019t<\/em> eat are in the \u201cN\u00ed f\u00e9idir<\/strong>\u201d (can\u2019t\/not safe\/not recommended) group. The form of the word in parenthesis is the basic form and may need the various adjustments mentioned above. The slightly longer blanks mean that the answer will be a phrase, not just a single word.<\/p>\n
