I have two brothers and one sister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In this vocabulary list we see the verb &#8216;to have&#8217; in English. In Irish there is no straightforward verb &#8216;to have&#8217; so instead they use &#8216;<em>ag<\/em>&#8216; (at) to represent this &#8211; something that you &#8216;have&#8217; is described as being &#8216;at&#8217; you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Agam<\/em> &#8211; (at me)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I have<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Agat<\/em> &#8211; \u00a0(at you)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You have<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aige<\/span><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; (at him)<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He has<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aici<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; (at her)\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She has<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Againn<\/em> &#8211; (at us)\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We have<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Agaibh<\/em> &#8211; (at you all)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You all have<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Acu<\/span><\/em>\u00a0&#8211; (at them)\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They have<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, if you wanted to say I have two children, you would say <em>t<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>\u00e1 beirt ph\u00e1ist\u00ed agam,<\/em> literally &#8216;two children at me.&#8217; Or you could negate it and say<em> n\u00edl clann agam<\/em> &#8211; I do not have children, literally &#8216;no children at me.&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now that we have learned some new expressions and vocabulary, you may be asking yourself &#8211; how do I pronounce all of it? I would like to introduce you to ABAIR, which is a project of the Phonetics and Speech Laboratory at the\u00a0School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences, Trinity College Dublin. They have been developing synthetic voices for Irish since 2008. They have covered all three major dialects of Irish \u2013 <em>Gweedore<\/em> (Ulster), <em>R\u00e1th Chairn<\/em> (Connaught) and the Dingle Peninsula (Munster).
