T\u00e1. T\u00e1 beirt dhearth\u00e1ireacha agam agus deirfi\u00far amh\u00e1in.<\/em> –\u00a0<\/span>Yes. I have two brothers and one sister.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this vocabulary list we see the verb ‘to have’ in English. In Irish there is no straightforward verb ‘to have’ so instead they use ‘ag<\/em>‘ (at) to represent this – something that you ‘have’ is described as being ‘at’ you.<\/p>\n

Agam<\/em> – (at me)<\/span> I have<\/span><\/p>\n

Agat<\/em> – \u00a0(at you)\u00a0<\/span>You have<\/span><\/p>\n

Aige<\/span><\/em>\u00a0– (at him)He has<\/span><\/p>\n

Aici<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>– (at her)\u00a0She has<\/span><\/p>\n

Againn<\/em> – (at us)\u00a0<\/span>We have<\/span><\/p>\n

Agaibh<\/em> – (at you all)<\/span>You all have<\/span><\/p>\n

Acu<\/span><\/em>\u00a0– (at them)\u00a0They have<\/span><\/p>\n

So, if you wanted to say I have two children, you would say t<\/em>\u00e1 beirt ph\u00e1ist\u00ed agam,<\/em> literally ‘two children at me.’ Or you could negate it and say n\u00edl clann agam<\/em> – I do not have children, literally ‘no children at me.’\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now that we have learned some new expressions and vocabulary, you may be asking yourself – how do I pronounce all of it? I would like to introduce you to ABAIR, which is a project of the Phonetics and Speech Laboratory at the\u00a0School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences, Trinity College Dublin. They have been developing synthetic voices for Irish since 2008. They have covered all three major dialects of Irish \u2013 Gweedore<\/em> (Ulster), R\u00e1th Chairn<\/em> (Connaught) and the Dingle Peninsula (Munster).
