has happened with the Irish phrase \u201c<strong>a bheith ar b\u00eds<\/strong>\u201d (to be in suspense).\u00a0 I doubt it\u2019s really interpreted literally.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in singular.\u00a0 This is unlike other holidays that may use the singular but imply the plural, like \u201cMother\u2019s Day\u201d in English (singular, as shown by the placement of the apostrophe), generally translated as \u201c<strong>L\u00e1 na M\u00e1ithreacha<\/strong>\u201d (plural) in Irish.\u00a0 IF we were celebrating all woodchucks, we\u2019d have a phrase with the genitive plural, <strong>L\u00e1 na n\u00daitseach<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I realize some contenders will say one should just leave well enough alone and say \u201c<strong>L\u00e1 Groundhog<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 I see their viewpoint, but somehow \u201c<strong>L\u00e1 an \u00daitsigh<\/strong>\u201d seems to me to have pleasant resonance for this fun holiday.\u00a0 I agree that \u201c<strong>L\u00e1 an \u00daitsigh<\/strong>\u201d doesn\u2019t have the <em>gravitas<\/em> to substitute for the phrase \u201c<strong>L\u00e1 Groundhog<\/strong>\u201d as sometimes used in the political sense.\u00a0 Just try saying \u201c<strong>L\u00e1 an \u00daitsigh<\/strong>\u201d [law un OOCH-ee] and I think you\u2019ll see what I mean.\u00a0 At any rate, \u201c<strong>L\u00e1 an \u00daitsigh<\/strong>\u201d wouldn\u2019t have had the recognition value that \u201c<strong>L\u00e1 Groundhog<\/strong>\u201d does, so if others want to stick with \u201cgroundhog,\u2019\u2019 <strong>b\u00edodh acu<\/strong>.\u00a0 I also toyed with\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">several other phrases for \u201cgroundhog.\u201d\u00a0 In theory, <strong>*muc thal\u00fan<\/strong> could mean \u201cgroundhog,\u201d (lit. pig of the earth), but that sets up some confusion with the existing term \u201c<strong>arc\u00e1n tal\u00fan<\/strong>,\u201d which means \u201cearth pig\u201d as well as \u201canteater\u201d and \u201caardvark.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, a groundhog isn\u2019t a hog, which we need to keep in mind.\u00a0 We could also try *<strong>borra tal\u00fan<\/strong> or *<strong>collach coillte tal\u00fan<\/strong>, since <strong>borra <\/strong>(barrow, hog) and <strong>collach coillte<\/strong> also mean \u201chog\u201d in the physiological sense (ouch on his behalf!), but I\u00a0<\/span>decided these all sounded <strong>r\u00f3-mhuca\u00ed<\/strong> ([roh-WOOK-ee] too porcine).\u00a0 Listening to the sound of that, Chewbacca, you better watch out!).\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">3)
