But for today we\u2019ll practice counting them, which will involve our old friends, s\u00e9imhi\u00fa<\/strong> (lenition) agus ur\u00fa<\/strong> (eclipsis).\u00a0 Remember, the noun stays singular almost all the time when counting things in Irish, so we\u2019re still working off \u201cpuimc\u00edn<\/strong>\u201d (singular), not \u201cpuimc\u00edn\u00ed<\/strong>\u201d (plural, with the \u201c-\u00ed\u201d ending).\u00a0 Here goes:<\/p>\n

puimc\u00edn amh\u00e1in<\/strong> [Pw<\/sup>IM-keen uh-WAW-in], one pumpkin<\/p>\n

dh\u00e1 phuimc\u00edn<\/strong> [\u2026 FW<\/sup>IM-keen], two pumpkins (note: the \u201cp\u201d changes to \u201cph,\u201d pronounced like an \u201cf,\u201d all quite standard for lenition)<\/p>\n

Once we hit seven, the rules change and we switch to ur\u00fa<\/strong> (eclipsis), with the \u201cp\u201d changing to \u201cbp.\u201d\u00a0 Just the \u201cb\u201d of \u201cbp\u201d is pronounced, not the \u201cp.\u201d<\/p>\n

Counting in the teens?<\/p>\n

Now as for \u201csmashing,\u201d which of course I can\u2019t resist, there are several possible verbs:<\/p>\n

bloghadh<\/strong>, shattering, to shatter, breaking into bits, to break into bits,<\/p>\n

mion\u00fa<\/strong>, to mince, shatter, comminute (!), break into bits, or the \u201c-ing\u201d act thereof, or,<\/p>\n

smiotadh<\/strong>, smashing, to smash, striking, to strike, hitting, to hit, but also to chip, to chop, to pare, etc. the latter choices suggesting something quite different re: pumpkins<\/p>\n

But I\u2019ll go with a different phrase for \u201csmashing pumpkins,\u201d namely \u201csmidir\u00edn\u00ed a dh\u00e9anamh de phuimc\u00edn\u00ed<\/strong>\u201d (to smash pumpkins) since it \u00a0combines a word widely-known in English as well, one of the relatively few that come straight from Irish \u2013 smithereens.<\/p>\n

Here are some possible phrases:<\/p>\n

Ag d\u00e9anamh smidir\u00edn\u00ed de phuimc\u00edn\u00ed<\/strong>, smashing pumpkins<\/p>\n

T\u00e1 m\u00e9 ag d\u00e9anamh smidir\u00edn\u00ed de phuimc\u00edn\u00ed<\/strong>, I am smashing pumpkins.<\/p>\n

T\u00e1 smidir\u00edn\u00ed \u00e1 nd\u00e9anamh de phuimc\u00edn\u00ed<\/strong>, Pumpkins are being smashed, lit. Smithereens are being made of pumpkins.<\/p>\n

D\u00e9antar smidir\u00edn\u00ed de phuimc\u00edn\u00ed<\/strong>, Pumpkins are smashed, lit. Smithereens are made of pumpkins, implying a habitual or consistent activity<\/p>\n

And of course, that could continue, with the aimsir chaite<\/strong>, aimsir fh\u00e1istineach, srl.\u00a0 Ach sin blag \u00e9igin eile!<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re wondering if this blog is supposed to be a tribute to the band, The Smashing Pumpkins, well, um, erm, whatever, they\u2019ve got a catchy title for sure.\u00a0 But apparently they do want listeners to understand the word as the adjective form found in UK English, \u201csmashing,\u201d as in something being \u201cwizard\u201d or \u201ckeen,\u201d to harken back to Enid Blyton days.\u00a0 Of course, there\u2019s always the possibility, in the tradition of \u201cAn tUbhthoradh A D\u2019ith Siceag\u00f3<\/strong>,\u201d that the pumpkins themselves are doing the smashing, on a roll, one might say.\u00a0 If that\u2019s the case, then I\u2019d simply say, \u201cFainic!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n
