As you can see, we have a slight exception here to the \u201clenition for direct relative clauses\u201d rule, specifically for the past tense.\u00a0 <\/span>It happens that \u201cfuair<\/strong>\u201d doesn\u2019t get lenited.\u00a0 <\/span>It may be some comfort to know that this is not just in the circumstance of relative clauses, but also in the negative in simple sentences (i.e. ones without a relative clause).\u00a0 <\/span>For example: N\u00ed bhfuair s\u00ed m\u00f3ideim nua<\/strong> (She didn\u2019t get a new modem, with eclipsis, not lenition).\u00a0 <\/span>While \u201cn\u00ed<\/strong>\u201d (the negative particle) usually causes lenition of a following verb (N\u00ed dh\u00e9anaim, n\u00ed fheicfidh<\/strong>, etc.), it doesn\u2019t here.\u00a0 <\/span>Simply put, \u201cfuair<\/strong>\u201d gets eclipsed after \u201cn\u00ed<\/strong>\u201d instead of getting lenited, and nothing happens to it after the direct relative particle \u201ca<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Since we wanted to go from \u201can saol traidisi\u00fanta<\/strong>\u201d to \u201can saol ardteicni\u00fail<\/strong>,\u201d we could substitute here the full name of the object in question, which would be m<\/strong><\/span>odhn\u00f3ir\/d\u00edmhodhn\u00f3ir<\/span><\/strong><\/span> (modulator-demodulator).\u00a0 <\/span>But, as in everyday English, I think that would be a bit liopasta<\/strong> for daily use.\u00a0 <\/span>Looking at it though, I wonder if anyone toyed with the idea of using the first syllables of the Irish words to create a new word, as happened in English.\u00a0 <\/span>In Irish, that would have yielded the lilting \u201cmodh\/d\u00edmhodh<\/strong>,\u201d pronounced \u201cmoh-dee-woh,\u201d which somehow sounds like a misplaced chorus for the theme song of \u201can seachtar abhac<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>At least to me.\u00a0 <\/span>Samhla\u00edocht r\u00f3-aib\u00ed, b\u2019fh\u00e9idir<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
