I\u2019ve actually been poking around online trying to find out what year February as American Heart Month started, but gan \u00e9ifeacht<\/strong> (to no avail, lit. without effect).\u00a0 Eolas ag duine ar bith<\/strong>?\u00a0 I did find that 2002 marked an ch\u00e9ad bhliain<\/strong> for what I shall now name in Irish \u201cL\u00e1 Caite an Deirg<\/strong>\u201d (The Day of the Wearing of Red, i.e. \u201cWear Red Day\u201d), in honor of heart health.\u00a0 I Meirice\u00e1 ceili\u00fartar sin ar an gc\u00e9ad Aoine i m\u00ed Feabhra (3 Feabhra, i mbliana)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I see that Britain also has National Heart Month i m\u00ed Feabhra<\/strong> and that its \u201cL\u00e1 Caite an Deirg<\/strong>\u201d is ar an 26\u00fa l\u00e1 d\u2019Fheabhra gach bliain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ireland has a \u201cheart month\u201d also but it is held i m\u00ed Mhe\u00e1n F\u00f3mhair<\/strong>, so it isn\u2019t so neatly \u201cneas-suite<\/strong>\u201d with Valentine\u2019s Day as the February celebrations are.\u00a0 Bhuel<\/strong>, c\u2019est \u201cla mh\u00ed<\/strong>\u201d!<\/p>\n

In addition to being \u201cHeart Month\u201d (sna St\u00e1it Aontaithe agus sa Bhreatain, ar a laghad)<\/strong>, February is also, hmm, how shall I say it, “M\u00ed N\u00e1isi\u00fanta D\u00edograiseoir\u00ed Pr\u00e1ta\u00ed<\/strong>,\u201d again, sna St\u00e1it Aontaithe <\/strong>(details: http:\/\/pressroom.idahopotato.com\/category\/plm\/<\/a>).\u00a0 Whether there should be a \u201cPotato Lovers\u2019 Month\u201d in Ireland, is perhaps a moot point, since I think every day meets the needs of \u201cPotato Lovers\u201d in Ireland. \u00a0As for the term \u201cd\u00edograiseoir<\/strong>\u201d (enthusiast), I decided not to use \u201cleann\u00e1n<\/strong>\u201d (lover) or \u201csuir\u00edoch<\/strong>\u201d (lover, courter, wooer), since they are way too romantic for potato-fancying, I think! \u00a0In general , I find that phrases like \u201copera buff,\u201d \u201ccat fancier,\u201d \u201csports fan,\u201d and \u201clanguage enthusiast\u201d are quite intriguing in any language, but it\u2019s easy to go astray with them.\u00a0 For example, would we ever describe ourselves as \u201ccat buffs\u201d or \u201chockey fanciers\u201d? \u00a0\u00a0N\u00ed d\u00f3igh liom \u00e9, n\u00ed go\u00a0minic, ar a laghad<\/strong> (ach f\u00e9ach an n\u00f3ta th\u00edos).<\/strong>\u00a0 There are various choices in Irish (mostly \u00e1bhar blag eile<\/strong>), but I will note here that I was toying with \u201cdaoine m\u00f3ra pr\u00e1ta\u00ed<\/strong>,\u201d along the lines of \u201cdaoine m\u00f3ra peile<\/strong>\u201d (football enthusiasts) or daoine m\u00f3ra ceoil<\/strong> (music lovers).\u00a0 But somehow \u201cdaoine m\u00f3ra pr\u00e1ta\u00ed<\/strong>\u201d conveyed more of an image of \u201c*tolgachas<\/strong>\u201d than I intended.\u00a0 So, \u201cd\u00edograiseoir\u00ed.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Anyway, getting back to our pr\u00edomhth\u00e9ama<\/strong> [PREEV-HAYM-uh], or should I say, to the heart of the matter, the word \u201ccro\u00ed,<\/strong>\u201d here are its basic forms:<\/p>\n

An cro\u00ed<\/strong>, the heart<\/p>\n

An chro\u00ed,<\/strong> of the heart, sl\u00e1inte an chro\u00ed<\/strong> (the health of the heart). \u00a0Note the pronunciation, with the guttural “kh” sound of “chro\u00ed<\/strong>” [khree].<\/p>\n

Mo chro\u00ed<\/strong>, my heart, or in some contexts, \u201cof my heart\u201d (cuisle mo chro\u00ed<\/strong>; pulse of my heart, a term of affection, when used in direct address: “A chuisle mo chro\u00ed<\/strong>“)<\/p>\n

For the plural: cro\u00edthe<\/strong> [KREE-huh], hearts (note that the \u201c\u00ed\u201d stays long); na cro\u00edthe<\/strong>, the hearts, and na gcro\u00edthe<\/strong> [nuh GREE-huh], of the hearts.<\/p>\n

Regarding tolgachas<\/strong>: well, what can I say?\u00a0 Perhaps \u201ccouchiness\u201d? \u00a0\u201cCouchiness\u201d has several hundred hits online, which is more than I anticipated.\u00a0 But even that catch-all of every word under the sun (and some that have never seen the light of day), urbandictionary.com, says \u201cCouchiness isn\u2019t defined yet.\u201d\u00a0 Mo l\u00e9an, n\u00ed fheicim lorg ar bith den fhocal sin, \u201ctolgachas,\u201d ar an Idirl\u00edon.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cMwya\u2019r piti<\/em>,\u201d mar a deir na Breatnaigh<\/strong>.\u00a0 To get back to the material side of it, \u201ctolg<\/strong>\u201d is \u201ccouch\u201d or \u201csofa\u201d and \u201c-achas<\/strong>\u201d is suffix of abstraction (as in B\u00e9arlachas, Gaelachas<\/strong>, etc)<\/p>\n

N\u00f3ta:<\/strong> As for \u201chockey fanciers\u201d vs. \u201chockey fans,\u201d I do find about 200 references to hockey fanciers (plural) online but only 10 for \u201chockey fancier\u201d (singular).\u00a0 As for \u201chockey fan,\u201d do I need to even quote the figures?\u00a0 About 2.3 million hits for \u201chockey fans\u201d and, surprisingly, about the same for \u201chockey fan\u201d (singular).\u00a0 I think the point is clear \u2013 certain activities tend to go with certain words for expressing one\u2019s interest in them.<\/p>\n
