By now maybe you’ve made your way through the first verse of “An Bhratach Gheal-R\u00e9altach”<\/strong> (The Star-Spangled Banner) and proceeded on to the less frequently sung second one, presented in the two recent blogs (naisc th\u00edos<\/strong>).\u00a0 But, mar a d\u00e9arfadh<\/strong>\u00a0Ron Popeil (d\u00e1 mbeadh Gaeilge aige<\/strong>), “Ach fan, t\u00e1 a thuilleadh ann!<\/strong>”\u00a0 Yes, t\u00e1 dh\u00e1 v\u00e9arsa eile ann c\u00e9 nach gcantar go minic iad<\/strong>.\u00a0 Seo v\u00e9arsa a tr\u00ed, mar a d’aistrigh an tAthair \u00d3 Gramhnaigh \u00e9 sa bhliain 1898<\/strong>.\u00a0 As with the previous two verses, I’m adding a pronunciation guide, my own literal translation of the Irish back into English, and a glossary. \u00a0Francis Scott Key’s original lines are in italics in each box. \u00a0They rhyme, naturally; my literal “back-translation” doesn’t rhyme and isn’t meant to.<\/p>\n

A further note here for singers (as opposed to foghraithe, teangeolaithe, sint\u00e9iseoir\u00ed cainte agus a leith\u00e9id\u00ed<\/strong>): this pronunciation guide is really designed for singing, not for individual analysis of focail<\/strong> or siolla\u00ed<\/strong>.\u00a0 In most cases, in fact, I’ve transcribed the sounds as I would also speak them (not trying to fit a meter), since it seems to work.\u00a0 Occasionally, though, I’ve made the words flow together even more than may be typical in speech, as for example in:<\/p>\n

‘S t\u00e1 an bhratach gheal-r\u00e9altach<\/strong> [stawn VRAH-tukh YA-AL-RAYL-tukh]<\/p>\n

I’ve collapsed the first three words (‘s t\u00e1 an)<\/strong> into one sound (“stawn”), since it’s more singable that way (IMThF, ar a laghad<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

One or two more notes before plunging into the text:<\/p>\n

a) Maidir leis an bhfocal “drong”<\/strong> – does it look or sound familiar (even before you peek at the translation)?\u00a0 If it does, that’s because it’s a direct parallel to the English word “throng.”\u00a0 Remember, the initial Irish broad “d” sound has a dental quality, with the tongue pressed against the back of the upper teeth, so it’s not surprising that the English equivalent has a “hard th” sound.<\/p>\n

b) Maidir leis an bhfocal B\u00e9arla<\/strong> “vauntingly”: I think “go teann<\/strong>” was a good choice here, given the context.\u00a0 I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anything described as occurring “vauntingly” in actual spoken English.\u00a0 The ordinary Irish words for “vaunting” (if anything about the word “vaunting” could be described as “ordinary”) are “ma\u00edteach<\/strong>” and “gaisci\u00fail<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

Ma\u00edteach<\/strong>, sometimes spelled “maoiteach<\/strong>” [MWEE-tchukh] means both “boastful” or “begrudging.”\u00a0 You might remember the word from the catchy, semi-rhyming phrase “cu\u00edosach gan a bheith ma\u00edteach<\/strong>” (lit. fair\/middling without being boastful). And btw, please do note the s\u00edneadh fada<\/strong> in the first spelling given for this word, a near-look-alike to “maiteach<\/strong>” [MWATCH-ukh], which means “forgiving” or “forgiven” (!), based on the verb “maith<\/strong>” (forgive).<\/p>\n

“Gaisci\u00fail<\/strong>” [GASH-kyoo-il] can have both a positive and a negative sense in Irish, meaning either “warlike\/valiant” or “vainglorious\/boastful.” The noun on which it is based, “gaisce<\/strong>” [GASH-kyuh], can also have a neutral\/positivish implication or a negative one (neutral: arms, weapons; positive: a feat of arms; negative: bravado, showing off, or, as I’m tickled to note, “swank.”)<\/p>\n

And where’s that “vaunting” from anyway?\u00a0 Apparently from Latin “vanus<\/em>” (“vain” — That figures!). \u00a0Hmm, you’re so “vaunting”? As in, “you probably think this song is about you!” \u00a0— sin<\/strong> definitely \u00e1bhar blag eile<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

*Iarsmaoineamh (28 Ean\u00e1ir 2015)<\/strong>: For “rian gr\u00e1nna a gcosa<\/strong>,” we see “a gcosa<\/strong>” for “(of) their feet.” \u00a0The official modern standard form for this would be “a gcos<\/strong>,” without the final “-a.” \u00a0But at the time\u00a0\u00d3 Gramhnaigh’s translation was made, the Caighde\u00e1n Oifigi\u00fail<\/strong> didn’t exist yet. \u00a0Many words had numerous variations in spelling and grammatical treatment. \u00a0In fact, many still do, even after the spelling reforms of the 1950s. \u00a0It’s impossible to know now whether\u00a0\u00d3 Gramhnaigh was debating between “a gcosa<\/strong>” and “a gcos<\/strong>,” but he may have felt, as I do, that “a gcosa<\/strong>” flows better. \u00a0Pairing “gr\u00e1nna<\/strong>” with “gcosa<\/strong>” not only creates some alliteration (g + g), but the two “-a” endings create a loose sort of end rhyme. \u00a0And, while we’re at it, vowels are widely recognized as being easier to sing, mar is eol do na hIod\u00e1laigh! \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
