You may have noticed that the words for the colors are lenited after the word \u201cscoth\u00f3g<\/strong>\u201d (chorcar<\/strong>– and bh\u00e1n<\/strong>-, not corcar<\/strong>– and b\u00e1n<\/strong>-).\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because \u201cscoth\u00f3g<\/strong>\u201d is feminine, and lenition of adjectives following feminine nouns is one of the ways that adjectives grammatically agree with their nouns in Irish.\u00a0 English has lost this type of gender agreement, with just a relic of it in such differentiations as \u201cblonde\u201d vs. \u201cblond.\u201d\u00a0 But the other European languages I\u2019ve studied all have some aspect of it \u2013 it\u2019s just that it\u2019s marked at the END of the word, or perhaps with a vowel change in the middle, not at the beginning of the word.\u00a0 Examples include gwyn<\/em> and gwen<\/em> (Welsh), beau<\/em> and belle<\/em> (French), and bello<\/em> and bella<\/em> (Spanish, Italian).\u00a0<\/p>\n
