Regarding “Is cuma<\/strong>,” the negative of that answer (with “n\u00ed<\/strong>“) is relatively rare.\u00a0 Some people consider it downright wrong, others consider it “student slang,” or should we say “idirtheanga<\/strong>“? \u00a0Others consider that the negative statement with “cuma<\/strong>” has more to do with general “relevance” than with a specific person “caring” about something.\u00a0 An example of the latter, with\u00a0no “liom”<\/strong> element, would be “N\u00ed cuma faoi ghanntanas uisce sa ch\u00e9ad seo<\/strong>” (Water shortage isn’t irrelevant in this century, more lit. it isn’t indifferent\/irrelevant about lack of water in this century, i.e. it matters).<\/p>\n

My strategy for this negative answer to a “cuma leat<\/strong>” question, is just to think of something else to answer, sometimes prevaricating or verbally shilly-shallying (I’ve been known to), until I think of what I really do want to say.\u00a0 If someone else seems to really like something, I don’t usually like to come right out and say I dislike it (N\u00ed maith liom \u00e9<\/strong>) or that I hate it (Is fuath liom \u00e9<\/strong>).\u00a0 Unless I have to.\u00a0 So I might say, “Bhuel, t\u00e1 a fhios agat, n\u00edl m\u00e9 cinnte faoi sin<\/strong>.” \u00a0And since I can safely say, “Is bre\u00e1 liom an ghramadach<\/strong>,” that’s one oft-hated topic (gramadach<\/strong>) down that would tend to arise in Irish language learning discussions.\u00a0 \u00c0 chacun son go\u00fbt<\/em> (or as it’s usually said in English contexts, Chacun \u00e0 son go\u00fbt<\/em>), for which the \u00a0closest Irish I can think of is “Beatha duine a thoil<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

It may seem strange to have a question (An cuma leat faoi<\/strong>?) to which there is either a positive-verb answer, “Is cuma<\/strong>” (lit. “is indifferent”) with a negative connotation (I don’t care) or the need for a tectonically-shifted change in vocabulary.\u00a0 But there are phrases in English that don’t really have a negative, for example “So be it” or “As it were.” \u00a0Are there negative forms for those phrases as such?\u00a0 Methinks not!\u00a0 (And “What’s the Irish for ‘methinks’?” thou mayest be a-thinking; the typical equivalents are not so archaicish: dar liom, is d\u00f3igh liom, feictear dom<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
