Before we proceed further with such topics as\u00a0tearmainn asal<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0seitreach<\/strong>\u00a0(an fhuaim a dh\u00e9anann capaill)<\/strong>, let\u2019s take a look at a few more basic vocabulary words for\u00a0ceathairchosaigh eacha\u00ed<\/strong>.\u00a0 And, to really revisit an\u00a0\u00e1bhar<\/strong>\u00a0from the past, let’s pick one from each declension.\u00a0 Remember the\u00a0d\u00edochlaonta\u00ed<\/strong>\u00a0(categories of nouns), from 1st<\/sup>\u00a0to 5th<\/sup>?\u00a0 \u00a0Our equine terms just happen to fill all five categories:\u00a0asal (1\u00fa), mi\u00fail (2\u00fa), gr\u00famaeir (3\u00fa), p\u00f3na\u00ed (4\u00fa), l\u00e1ir (5\u00fa)<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201cGr\u00famaeir<\/strong>\u201d is an occupational term, a groom \u2013 none of the terms for the equines themselves seem to fit in the third declension. \u00a0\u00a0The rest all refer to animals.<\/p>\n

So here\u2019s a little review of what happens to these nouns when we go through their various forms, plural, possessive (genitive), and plural possessive.\u00a0 I\u2019m giving all the forms with the definite article, since the indefinite forms are reasonably predictable from them:<\/p>\n

So that\u2019s it, stripped down, bare-bones samples of the different endings used in declensions.\u00a0 I was all set to use \u201cbainne coipthe<\/strong>\u201d for the example to go with “l\u00e1rach<\/strong>” (the genitive case of \u201cmare\u201d). \u00a0but then I realized it could easily mean both “fermented milk” (as I intended) and “whipped (i.e. frothy) milk,” as in \u201cuachtar coipthe<\/strong>\u201d (whipped cream).\u00a0\u00a0 So I decided to scrap that for something more topical (searraigh<\/strong>), much as I would have liked to have included \u201ckumis<\/em>\u201d (bainne coipthe na l\u00e1rach,\u00a0<\/strong>the fermented milk of the mare) in our discussion.<\/p>\n
