{"id":3231,"date":"2012-09-21T19:00:06","date_gmt":"2012-09-21T19:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/irish\/?p=3231"},"modified":"2014-04-30T16:47:35","modified_gmt":"2014-04-30T16:47:35","slug":"na-mionna-na-miosan-ny-meeghyn-in-irish-scottish-gaelic-and-manx-cuid-2-as-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/irish\/na-mionna-na-miosan-ny-meeghyn-in-irish-scottish-gaelic-and-manx-cuid-2-as-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Na M\u00edonna, Na M\u00ecosan, Ny Meeghyn (in Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Manx), Cuid 2 as 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>(le R\u00f3isl\u00edn)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this blog, we&#8217;ll look more closely at the meanings of the Manx Gaelic names for the months and see what their names mean in Irish.\u00a0 For those who want <strong>an B\u00e9arla<\/strong>, that will also be provided <strong>i gcairt eile (th\u00edos)<\/strong>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s <strong>suimi\u00fail<\/strong> to note how readily translatable the Manx names are into Irish, and if you say them out loud, they&#8217;ll sound a lot like Irish (or Scottish Gaelic).\u00a0 It&#8217;s just the spelling system that&#8217;s dramatically different.\u00a0 But that&#8217;s not really surprising, given that the Manx spelling system is <em>not <\/em>an offshoot of traditional Gaelic spelling, which gives us pairs like Irish &#8220;<strong>fuinneog<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>t\u00e1<\/strong>&#8221; and Scottish &#8220;<em>uinneag<\/em>&#8221; and &#8220;<em>tha<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 The Manx spelling system, in contrast, was devised more or less singlehandedly and is credited to John Phillips (ca. 1555-1633), the Welsh-born Anglican Bishop of (the diocese of) Sodor and Man.\u00a0 His system was based primarily on the orthography of English, with some influence from Welsh as well.<\/p>\n<p>As for &#8220;Sodor,&#8221; if it sounds children&#8217;s-book familiar, the name was used for the island setting of the Thomas the Tank Engine series by their author, the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awbrey (1911-1997).\u00a0 It was a fictitious island, so Reverend Awbrey was free to develop the location as he wished.\u00a0 But he took the name from the Old Norse &#8220;<em>Su\u00f0reyjar,&#8221; (<\/em>Southern Islands), which got anglicized first as the &#8220;Sudreys&#8221; and later as &#8220;Sodor.&#8221;\u00a0 This was part of the &#8220;Kingdom of Mann and the Isles,&#8221; including the Outer Hebrides, governed in medieval times by Norway. The designation &#8220;Sodor and Man&#8221; is still in use and Robert Mar Erskine Paterson, MLC, currently holds the title of Bishop of Sodor and Man.<\/p>\n<p>And back to the nitty-gritty.\u00a0 As you&#8217;ll see, in most cases, the Manx word isn&#8217;t the same concept as the Irish.\u00a0 But anyone moderately fluent in Irish will recognize the logic of the names (&#8220;<em>Jerrey Geuree<\/em>&#8221; means &#8220;<strong>Deireadh Geimhridh<\/strong>,&#8221; i.e. &#8220;end of winter,&#8221; etc.). \u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;ve given a pronunciation guide for the Irish translations as well &#8211; this is where you can really see the similarities between Irish and Manx sounds.\u00a0 \u00a0If you read the <em>Gaelg<\/em> column and the <strong>Fuaimni\u00fa<\/strong> (pronunciation)
