Why no lenition of “scoil<\/strong>“?\u00a0 The consonant cluster “sc” never gets lenited (bunscoil, me\u00e1nscoil, gairmscoil, mo scoil, a scoil, srl.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why no lenition of “dealbh<\/strong>,” especially since “d” is lenitable (as we see in “mo dheasc<\/strong>” or “A Dhiarmaid<\/strong>!”).\u00a0 It’s the so-called “DNTLS” rule, where a pair of these letters usually causes “resistance” to lenition (as, for example, in “seanteach,” “seansaighdi\u00fair,” “seand\u00fan,” “olldord,” “olltoghch\u00e1n,”<\/strong> and “ollsn\u00e1ith\u00edn,”<\/strong> the latter of which, somewhat scarily, means “giant fiber”!).\u00a0 So “dealbh<\/strong>” remains the same, simply because it starts with the letter “d.”\u00a0 The standard examples, showing lenition, of course would include “seanbhean,” “seanfhear,” “ollchathair”<\/strong> (megalopolis) and “ollmhargadh<\/strong>” (supermarket).<\/p>\n
