In a previous blog, we discussed\u00a0the origin of the English word “hurricane,” from which we get “hairic\u00edn” <\/strong>in Irish.\u00a0 There are at least two schools of thought on the origin of the word “hurricane.”\u00a0 One is that it is adapted from the Carib for \u201cGod of Evil\u201d and the other is that it is from the name of a Mayan storm god, Hurakan.\u00a0 \u00a0Either way, it was “hurac\u00e1n”<\/em> in Spanish before it reached either English or Irish.\u00a0 https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/irish\/cinealacha-stoirmeacha-kinds-of-storms\/<\/a><\/p>\n

You might also remember some vocabulary for different types of storms.\u00a0 Here’s a list of storm-related words, with some practice sentences or Q & A to go along with them.<\/p>\n

And there’s always the useful prefix “droch<\/strong>-” (bad), which can be used for “drochaimsir<\/strong>” (bad weather), “drochstoirm<\/strong>” (a bad storm), or “drocho\u00edche<\/strong>” (a bad night).\u00a0 That is if you’re not referring to the infamous Irish “o\u00edche na gaoithe m\u00f3ire<\/strong>” (night of the big wind).<\/p>\n
