{"id":37,"date":"2009-05-31T00:27:19","date_gmt":"2009-05-31T04:27:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/irish\/?p=37"},"modified":"2009-05-31T00:27:19","modified_gmt":"2009-05-31T04:27:19","slug":"being-a-gael-mheiriceanach-gael-cheanadach-or-gael-astralach-or-any-other-nationality-%e2%80%9cas-gaeilge%e2%80%9d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/irish\/being-a-gael-mheiriceanach-gael-cheanadach-or-gael-astralach-or-any-other-nationality-%e2%80%9cas-gaeilge%e2%80%9d\/","title":{"rendered":"Being a Gael-Mheirice\u00e1nach, Gael-Cheanadach, or Gael-Astr\u00e1lach, or Any Other Nationality \u201cas Gaeilge\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">We recently discussed the various ways to use the word \u201c<strong>Gael-Mheirice\u00e1nach<\/strong>\u201d to say something is \u201cIrish-American\u201d or \u201cI am an Irish-American.&#8221; Let\u2019s go global and discuss some more possibilities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">If you\u2019re one of about 4.5 million Canadians with Irish ancestry, you could say, \u201c<strong>Is Gael-Cheanadach m\u00e9.\u201d<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong>If you\u2019re one of almost 2 million Irish-Australians, you could say, \u201c<strong>Is Gael-Astr\u00e1lach m\u00e9.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Please keep in mind as you read this, that the main goal in today\u2019s blog is to show how to say that one is an Irish-American, an Irish-Canadian, etc. It would take a book, or more, to thoroughly discuss Irish identity, including such terms as <strong>Gael-Mheirice\u00e1nach<\/strong> (Irish-American), <strong>Gael Meirice\u00e1nach <\/strong>or <strong>\u00c9ireannach Meirice\u00e1nach<\/strong> (American-Irish), <strong>n\u00e1isi\u00fanaigh \u00c9ireannacha<\/strong> (Irish nationals), <strong>\u00c9ireannaigh eitneacha<\/strong> (ethnic Irish), <strong>easaor\u00e1naigh<\/strong> (ex-pats), and what, if any, difference it makes if one is from <strong>an ch\u00e9ad ghl\u00fain<\/strong> (first generation) or <strong>an tr\u00ed\u00fa gl\u00fain <\/strong>(third generation). In fact, even the term \u201cfirst generation,\u201d regarding <strong>inimirce <\/strong>(immigration), is in dispute, since it can refer to either the immigrants themselves, or, more commonly in my experience, to the first generation born in the new homeland.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>So the goal here is not to tell people <em>how<\/em> to self-identify themselves, but to give them the Irish vocabulary to say what they want to say about themselves. Requests welcome! Admittedly, some will give me pause to reflect, especially if I haven\u2019t seen them used before.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><strong>Gael-Nua-Eabhracach<\/strong> for an Irish-New Yorker, <strong>srl<\/strong>.?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">And here are a few more straightforward examples, i.e. unhyphenated, using some of terms from the previous places on Celtic place names and nationalities: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Is \u00c9ireannach m\u00e9<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">. I\u2019m an Irishman.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Is Breatnach mn\u00e1 \u00ed Catherine Zeta-Jones, agus ban-aisteoir iontach. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Catherine Zeta-Jones is a Welshwoman and a wonderful actress.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Is Briot\u00e1nach \u00e9 Alan Stivell, agus cl\u00e1irseoir den scoth<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">. Or like \u201cBossy the Cow\u201d but not \u201ca bossy boss,\u201d at least in my English pronunciation. The vowel sound is \u201caaahh.\u201d Although this word looks like the English \u201cas,\u201d it isn\u2019t!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Chornach<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">: when the sentence is in the past tense, the verb \u201cis\u201d changes to \u201cba\u201d and the word <strong>Cornach <\/strong>changes to <strong>Chornach<\/strong>, meaning you have a double dose of pronouncing the Buch-Achtung-Chutzpah \u201cch\u201d sound.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We recently discussed the various ways to use the word \u201cGael-Mheirice\u00e1nach\u201d to say something is \u201cIrish-American\u201d or \u201cI am an Irish-American.&#8221;
