In each case, there is no one-word <strong>eitneainm<\/strong> (ethnonym) in Irish for the group the way there is in English (a Nova Scotian, a Newfoundlander). Nor is there a hyphenated version. A Nova Scotian is \u201c<strong>duine as Albain Nua\u201d <\/strong>and a Newfoundlander is<strong> \u201cduine as Talamh an \u00c9isc\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">For these two groups, the following structures would be likely\u2014and note that we\u2019re no longer saying, \u201cI <em>am<\/em> an X,\u201d but \u201cI am <em>from<\/em> X,\u201d as in \u201c<strong>Is as Albain Nua m\u00e9\u201d <\/strong>(I am from Nova Scotia) or \u201c<strong>Is as Talamh an \u00c9isc m\u00e9\u201d<\/strong> (I am from Newfoundland). This construction, \u201cI am from X,\u201d can be used whether or not the relevant place name has an Irish equivalent. T\u00e1 Breatnais agam mar sin.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">From these, you can see that some non-Irish places have traditional Irish names (<strong>Alasca, Hav\u00e1\u00ed, Nua-Gheirs\u00ed<\/strong>).<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Most do not (Aachen, Zelienople, etc.), except for country names, almost all of which do have an Irish version and which will be <strong>\u00c1.B.E.<\/strong><span>\u00a0 <\/span>But regarding city names, states, provinces, etc., whether or not there is an Irish version depends on history, tradition, perhaps inherent translatability and perhaps the interest of a translator or local Irish-language group. I still don\u2019t see <strong>Siceag\u00f3<\/strong> listed in the normal Irish reference sources, but have seen it used fairly widely since around 1990 by Irish speakers from the area. \u201cWashington\u201d stays the same in Irish, seemingly a logical choice, since it comes from a surname. But, at least a few languages have adapted it to their own spelling systems (<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial\">Waszyngton<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Arial\"> <strong>i b<\/strong><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Polainnis; <\/span><\/strong><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Va\u015dingtono<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"> <strong>i Sprantais<\/strong>). It\u2019s a little hard to predict. I must confess to adapting \u201cSaorsheilbh,\u201d which means \u201cfreehold,\u201d for the town. And I imagine that if there are enough Irish speakers there, they\u2019re doing the same thing. As for Llanfair PG in Irish, I could translate it sometime, whirlpool, red cave, and all, but it would just be for the challenge, and maybe some practice with <strong>an tuiseal ginideach<\/strong> (the genitive case). It\u2019s more or less a foregone conclusion that there\u2019s no viable Irish equivalent.<span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in
