And now it does set me thinking.\u00a0 What is the title for the “Second Dog of the United States?”\u00a0 So let’s look briefly at na horduimhreacha i nGaeilge<\/b> (first, second, third, etc.).<\/p>\n

The Irish for “the first” is “an ch\u00e9ad<\/b>” [un hyayd, with the “c” silent and the “h” is as in “Hugh,” “Huw,” “hew,” or “human,” not as in “hood” or “hoot.”].\u00a0 Sampla\u00ed:<\/b><\/p>\n

an ch\u00e9ad fhear<\/b> [un hyayd ar, with the “a” of “ar” like English “Larry,” not like English “are” or “bar”], the first man<\/p>\n

an ch\u00e9ad url\u00e1r<\/b>, the first floor, which in Ireland and the UK, and probably much of the English-speaking world, is what Americans would call the “second floor.”\u00a0 Ach sin sc\u00e9al eile.<\/b><\/p>\n

When the phrase “the first … of …” pertains to a proper noun (like “of the United States” or “of Henry VIII”), “an ch\u00e9ad<\/b>” changes to simply “c\u00e9ad<\/b>” and the definite article (“an<\/b>“) is dropped, as in:<\/p>\n

C\u00e9ad Mhadra na St\u00e1t Aontaithe<\/b>, The First Dog of the United States<\/p>\n

There is another slight change for “The First Dog of the United States of America<\/i>“:<\/p>\n

C\u00e9ad Mhadra St\u00e1it Aontaithe Mheirice\u00e1<\/b><\/p>\n

As for mn\u00e1 c\u00e9ile Anra\u00ed VIII<\/b>, we would start with:<\/p>\n

You might have noticed in the examples above that the phrase “an ch\u00e9ad<\/b>” (“the first”) triggers lenition, which causes “fear<\/b>” [say “far,”\u00a0 like the “lar” of “Larry,”] to sound like “ar” (like the “-ar-” of “Larry”).\u00a0 In other words, with lenition, the “f” of “fear<\/b>” becomes “fh,” which is silent.\u00a0 So “fhear<\/b>” starts out with a vowel sound, not an “f” or an “h” sound.<\/p>\n

But this sound change (lenition), doesn’t occur after “dara<\/b>,” “tr\u00ed\u00fa<\/b>,” etc. \u00a0\u00a0So we have:<\/p>\n

an dara fear<\/b>, the second man<\/p>\n

an tr\u00ed\u00fa fear<\/b>, the third man (agus sin sc\u00e9al freisin<\/b>!)<\/p>\n

srl. <\/b><\/p>\n

Getting back to “Sunny,” the Irish for “The Second Dog of the United States” would be:<\/p>\n

Dara Madra na St\u00e1t Aontaithe<\/b><\/p>\n

And for “The Second Dog of the United States of America<\/i>, ” we’d have:<\/p>\n

Dara Madra St\u00e1it Aontaithe Mheirice\u00e1 <\/b><\/p>\n

If we just say “the second dog,” that’s “an dara madra<\/b>,” and if it’s an official title (why not?), it would be “An Dara Madra<\/b>” (capitalized). \u00a0\u00a0That’s without the “United States” part, as described above.<\/p>\n

And just as a reminder, if we go back to “Bo,” and just want to say “The First Dog,” we return to using lenition, “An Ch\u00e9ad Mhadra.”<\/b><\/p>\n

So, at any rate, there we have it, C\u00e9ad Mhadra na St\u00e1t Aontaithe<\/b> and Dara Madra na St\u00e1t Aontaithe<\/b>.\u00a0 And what if we were to do a blog sometime on madra\u00ed na n-uachtar\u00e1n eile?\u00a0 Sin sc\u00e9al.\u00a0 Dh\u00e1 mhadra dh\u00e9ag ag Calvin Coolidge.\u00a0 Deich madra ag John F.
