An ndearna t\u00fa smidir\u00edn\u00ed de ____________ riamh?\u00a0 (Na freagra\u00ed: Rinne\u00a0 \/ N\u00ed dhearna)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As for the background of the word &#8220;<strong>puimc\u00edn<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0itself, I haven&#8217;t found any examples of it in Irish before the 1950s, and it also doesn&#8217;t appear in the 1982 <em>Focl\u00f3ir Eacnama\u00edocht Bhaile<\/em>, suggesting that the use of vegetable itself in Ireland and the use of the word in Irish have mostly developed over the last 50 years.\u00a0 And my hunch is that it&#8217;s more the latter half of that time period.<\/p>\n<p>Not that any of that is surprising.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a New World vegetable and even its early usage in English is spotty.\u00a0 According to Google&#8217;s Ngram for &#8220;pumpkin,&#8221; there is one use in 1617 and then a leap until the next example, in 1681.\u00a0 The 1617 example predates the 1654 earliest usage date cited elsewhere.\u00a0 Not that that this search is exhaustive but it does give us a guideline.\u00a0 Then there is a slow but steady rise in citations until the 1930s-50s, a brief drop, and then a fairly major escalation in use until the present decade.<\/p>\n<p>Curiously, for a New World food, its name comes from ancient Greek; it&#8217;s not an English adaptation of a Native American word the way &#8220;succotash&#8221; and &#8220;quahog&#8221; are.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen the original Greek word, <i>pep\u014dn, <\/i>translated both as &#8220;large melon&#8221; and as &#8220;ripened.&#8221;\u00a0 So if there are any scholars of ancient Greek on this list who could clarify, I&#8217;m sure readers would be interested.<\/p>\n<p>And for the third part of this blog, we&#8217;ll look briefly at numbers and pumpkins.\u00a0 Remember: <strong>s\u00e9imhi\u00fa<\/strong> from 2 to 6 and <strong>ur\u00fa<\/strong> from 7 to 10.\u00a0 Here are just a few blanks to fill in, with one longish line each, so as not to give away whether one letter or two is needed (<strong>freagra\u00ed th\u00edos<\/strong>):<\/p>\n<p><strong>dh\u00e1 _____uimc\u00edn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>c\u00faig ____uimc\u00edn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>seacht ____uimc\u00edn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>aon ____uimc\u00edn d\u00e9ag<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>fiche ____uimc\u00edn<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bhuel, bain sult as do phuimc\u00edn\u00ed m\u00e1 t\u00e1 siad agat.\u00a0 Agus snoigh leat, muna bhfuil siad snoite agat f\u00f3s!
