But what really caught my eye was this article http:\/\/www.inquisitr.com\/1045015\/miley-cyrus-creepy-space-cat-explained\/<\/a>, which explains the technology behind the imagery used in Miley’s November 25th American Music Awards performance.\u00a0 An bhfaca t\u00fa \u00e9<\/b>?\u00a0 The article includes an image of the original cat graphic, with a mundane background and “cuteness” factor quotation.\u00a0 An bhfaca t\u00fa an cat gleoite sula bhfaca t\u00fa mar ch\u00falra do amhr\u00e1n Miley \u00e9<\/b>?\u00a0 And then a discussion of cuteness vs. creepiness.\u00a0 Can “creepy” also be “cute”?\u00a0 Can’t say I ever pondered that exact issue before.<\/p>\n

The performance was noteworthy in its own right, but the alliterative possibilities connected to it were, for me, \u00a0“reo\u00e1n ar an gc\u00edste<\/b>.”\u00a0 Enough to warm “cais\u00edn\u00ed mo chro\u00ed<\/b>” as a language blogger.\u00a0 Seo na focail \u00f3 theideal an bhlag seo: <\/b><\/p>\n

cait\u00edn<\/b> [KAHTCH-een], little cat; the usual word for “kitten” is “pisc\u00edn<\/b>” [PISH-keen], with “pis\u00edn<\/b>” [PISH-een] and “puis\u00edn<\/strong>” [Pw<\/sup>ISH-een] as variations.\u00a0 But as you might have guessed, I chose “cait\u00edn<\/b>” because it gives us the possibilities for “beag\u00e1n uama<\/b>” (a little alliteration)<\/p>\n

caillte<\/b> [KYLE-tchuh], lost, from the verb “caill<\/b>” (lose).\u00a0\u00a0 The back-story as to how an cait\u00edn<\/b> ended up sa sp\u00e1s am<\/b>uigh is left up to the viewer’s imagination.\u00a0 Maybe an exile from “Cats in Space” (http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9DnQLI1XDzI<\/a>), in which “… A feline starship embarks on a mission to boldly go where no cat has gone before …”.<\/p>\n

caoineadh<\/b> [KEEN-yuh OR KEEN-uh], crying, weeping, lamenting, keening (an English word which comes from this Irish word)<\/p>\n

So we could put these together in a sentence along the lines of<\/p>\n

T\u00e1 an cait\u00edn caillte ag caoineadh<\/b>.\u00a0 The little cat is crying.<\/p>\n

Any ideas on why?\u00a0 If so, please send them in.\u00a0 You could start out a sentence with, “T\u00e1 an cait\u00edn caillte ag caoineadh mar<\/b> … . ” (The little lost cat is crying because …).<\/p>\n

Of course, the cat isn’t crying during the entire video, but when it does, it cries diamonds, so there’s go to be something intense going on there.<\/p>\n

As for the Irish for “creepy,” as in “creepy cat from outer space,” that’s a little food for thought.\u00a0 “Sn\u00e1mhach<\/b>” vaguely works, and it does mean “creepy,” but more in that sense of something that is “ag sn\u00e1mh ar an talamh<\/b>” (creeping along the ground; “sn\u00e1mh<\/b>” typically means “to swim” as in the water, but it can also mean to creep, crawl, or glide, depending on context).<\/p>\n

A “creepy” feeling isn’t typically expressed with an adjective in Irish (so we don’t really say “creepy cat”) but we could adapt one of the following:<\/p>\n

Bh\u00ed drithl\u00edn\u00ed fait\u00eds liom<\/b>, lit. Twinges of fear were with me (for a creepy feeling that really makes you afraid)<\/p>\n

Or a variation, a little more intense:<\/p>\n

Bh\u00ed drithl\u00edn\u00ed (eagla) ag dul tr\u00edom<\/b>, lit. Twinges (of fear) \u00a0were going through me. (for a “creepy-crawly” feeling)<\/p>\n

Chuir s\u00e9 c\u00e1ithn\u00edn\u00ed ag rith ar mo chraiceann<\/b>, It made my flesh creep, lit. It put small flakes (i.e. goose-flesh or goose-bumps) \u00a0running on my skin.<\/p>\n

Some other choices, which I think are a little strong for an cait\u00edn<\/b>, which after all, was selected for “a gleoiteacht<\/b>” (if it’s a female kitten; “a ghleoiteacht<\/b>” if it’s male)”<\/p>\n

lionraitheach<\/b> – creepy, terrifying<\/p>\n

uaigneach<\/b> – lonely, haunted, can describe a “creepy” place<\/p>\n
