1) “Uair<\/b>” is a pretty basic vocabulary word in Irish, usually learned quite early on.\u00a0 \u00a0First let’s look at the basics, then a few phrases:<\/p>\n

an uair<\/b>, the hour<\/p>\n

uaire<\/b>, of an hour<\/p>\n

na huaire<\/b>, of the hour<\/p>\n

uaireanta<\/b>, hours OR adverbially, “sometimes”<\/p>\n

na huaireanta<\/b>, the hours<\/p>\n

na n-uaireanta<\/b>, of the hours<\/p>\n

There’s also a special plural form that looks like the “tuiseal ginideach uatha<\/b>” form: uaire<\/b>.\u00a0 This is used after numerals, and generally takes an “h” or an “n” prefix, depending on the number (3-6 get “h;” 7-10 get “n-“):<\/p>\n

tr\u00ed huaire, ceithre huaire, c\u00faig huaire, s\u00e9 huaire<\/b> (with the “h” prefix)<\/p>\n

seacht n-uaire, ocht n-uaire, naoi n-uaire, deich n-uaire<\/b> (with the “n-” prefix, indicating “ur\u00fa<\/b>)<\/p>\n

Note that this word can also mean “time,” but in a more general \u00a0sense\u00a0 than “an t-am<\/b>” (as in “C\u00e9n t-am \u00e9<\/b>?”).<\/p>\n

Here are some phrases:<\/p>\n

den ch\u00e9ad uair<\/b>, for the first time<\/p>\n

ar feadh uaire<\/b>, for an hour, lit. for (the) length (of) an hour<\/p>\n

an uair seo den bhliain<\/b>, this time of (the) year<\/p>\n

uair sa bhliain<\/b>, once a year, lit. once “in the” year<\/p>\n

uaireanta scoile<\/b>, school-hours<\/p>\n

C\u00e1 huair<\/b>? (another h-prefix) OR C\u00e9n uair<\/b>?<\/p>\n

Related Irish words include “uairead\u00f3ir<\/b>” (a watch) and “uaireola\u00edocht<\/b>” (horology), but not “horoscope,” which is “tuisme\u00e1<\/b>.”<\/p>\n

2) ar son<\/b>: this is a “compound preposition” (a 2-word phrase serving as one preposition) and is one of many ways in Irish to say “for” (some others include: le haghaidh, i leith, i bhfabhar, thar cheann, in amhlachas, mar, do, <\/b>and \u00a0amhail<\/b> — definitely \u00e1bhar blag eile<\/b>!)<\/p>\n

The two words creating this phrase are “ar<\/b>” (on) + “son<\/b>” (a noun meaning “sake,” “behalf,” or “account,” but usually limited to this or similar phrases).\u00a0 “Son<\/b>” on its own, with its extended meanings, like happiness” and “prosperity” isn’t very widely used in everyday spoken Irish, i mo thaith\u00ed f\u00e9in, ar a laghad<\/b>.\u00a0 More typical words for “happiness” include “sonas<\/b>” (from the same root) and “gliondar<\/b>.”\u00a0 And for “prosperity,” we more typically have “rath<\/b>” (not “r\u00e1th<\/b>,” which is a “earthwork ring-fort,” often anglicized as “rath,” without the “fada<\/b>“) and “s\u00e9an<\/b>” (not “Se\u00e1n<\/b>,” the man’s name, although we could wish Se\u00e1n s\u00e9an<\/b>!) \u00a0But once again, that could lead us down the garden path of synonyms and near synonyms.<\/p>\n

“Ar son<\/b>” itself usually shows up in phrases like:<\/p>\n

ar son na bp\u00e1ist\u00ed<\/b>, for the sake of the children<\/p>\n

ar son na ndaoine<\/b>, on behalf of the people<\/p>\n

Note the ur\u00fa<\/b> (eclipsis) after “na<\/strong>” before plural nouns in the above phrases.<\/p>\n

ar son na s\u00edoch\u00e1na,<\/b> for the sake of (the) peace<\/p>\n

ar son an fhir sin,<\/b> on behalf of that man<\/p>\n

ar son na mn\u00e1 sin,<\/b> for the sake of that woman<\/p>\n

In the above examples, note that the use of the “tuiseal ginideach<\/b>” (“na s\u00edoch\u00e1na<\/b>” for “an ts\u00edoch\u00e1in;” “an fhir” <\/b>for “an fear;” <\/b>and “na mn\u00e1” <\/b>for “an bhean”<\/b>)<\/p>\n

As “account,” the word “son<\/b>” usually implies “because of,” as in:<\/p>\n

Is fi\u00fa <\/b>Toy Story<\/i> a fheice\u00e1il ar son na r\u00edomhbheochana at\u00e1 ann<\/b>, It’s worth seeing Toy Story<\/em> on account of the computer animation that is in it.<\/p>\n

3) And finally, we have the word “domhan<\/b>” (earth, world), showing up here in the “tuiseal ginideach<\/b>” as “domhain<\/b>.” \u00a0\u00a0Here are some of the forms of “domhan<\/b>,” with representative examples:<\/p>\n

an domhan<\/b>, the world, the earth; An Domhan Thoir<\/b>, The Eastern World<\/p>\n

an domhain<\/b>, of the world, of the earth; acmhainn\u00ed<\/b> an domhain<\/b>, the resources of the world. \u00a0NB: “Acmhainn<\/strong>” can either be a collective noun meaning “resources” or it can be pluralized, as “acmhainni<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

na domhain<\/b>, the worlds, and if we can postulate a context for it, “the earths” — b’fh\u00e9idir i bhficsean eola\u00edochta<\/b>?<\/p>\n

na ndomhan<\/b> [nuh NOH-wun], of the worlds (or “of the earths,” if the context warrants such a transalation); Cogadh na nDomhan<\/b>. \u00a0An dtuigeann t\u00fa an fr\u00e1sa?\u00a0 Muna dtuigeann, t\u00e1 an t-aistri\u00fach\u00e1n th\u00edos. <\/b><\/p>\n

Bhuel<\/b>, that brings us to the end of our basic phrase for today, “Earth Hour.” It’s interesting to note that the Irish translation adds the words “ar son<\/b>,” meaning “for the sake of,” so “Uair ar son an Domhain<\/strong>” is literally “An Hour for the sake of the Earth.”<\/p>\n
