Even though \u201cAn Ceathr\u00fa<\/strong>\u201d (The Fourth) is now over for this year, with all of its picnic activities, I imagine there will be many more picnic\u00ed <\/strong>held over the course of the summer.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here are some selections of bia picnice<\/strong> (picnic food) that are popular in my neck of the woods (and that\u2019s an idiom I won\u2019t attempt to translate into Irish!).\u00a0 <\/span>Why is \u201c-e\u201d added to the end of the word \u201cpicnic<\/strong>\u201d?\u00a0 <\/span>The phrase is literally \u201cfood of picnic\u201d and the \u201c-e\u201d ending serves the same function as the word \u201cof.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

arbhar sa dias<\/span><\/strong>, corn on the cob (that\u2019s if you\u2019re combining a corn boil with your picnic)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Some milseoga<\/strong> (sweets, desserts) are traditional, but not too much of the bia beagmhaitheasa <\/strong>(junk food).\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On the less formal side, you might have sceanra plaisteach<\/strong>, cup\u00e1in ph\u00e1ip\u00e9ir, agus naipc\u00edn\u00ed p\u00e1ip\u00e9ir.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong>For some elegant tailgating, however, you might have sceanra airgid, gloin\u00ed coise gloine <\/strong>(lit. “stemmed glasses of glass”), agus naipc\u00edn\u00ed l\u00edn.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And, of course, to carry all this, you would need a cise\u00e1n picnice<\/strong>, a picnic basket or hamper.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh, yes, there\u2019s one other ingredient, but not part of the biachl\u00e1r plean\u00e1ilte<\/strong> (planned menu), na seang\u00e1in uilel\u00e1ithreacha<\/strong> (the ubiquitous ants).\u00a0 <\/span>Just one ant?\u00a0 <\/span>Seang\u00e1n<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s the inserted \u201c-i\u201d that makes the word plural.\u00a0 <\/span>But seang\u00e1n amh\u00e1in ag l\u00e1thair phicnice?\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong>One ant at a picnic site?\u00a0 <\/span>Neamhdh\u00f3ch\u00fail <\/strong>(unlikely)! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If anyone wants to add an item to the liosta bia picnice<\/strong>, or even send in a favorite family recipe, I\u2019d be happy to help you work on translating it.\u00a0 <\/span>And since the s\u00e9as\u00far picnice Meirice\u00e1nach (<\/strong>American picnic season) <\/strong>lasts at least until L\u00e1 an Lucht Oibre <\/strong>(Labor Day, in America, that is, an ch\u00e9ad Luan i m\u00ed Mhe\u00e1n F\u00f3mhair<\/strong>, the first Monday in September), there\u2019s plenty of time to supplement our virtual picnic basket.\u00a0 <\/span>Molta\u00ed?<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span>Suggestions?\u00a0 <\/span>Anything that would be n\u00edos traidisi\u00fanta<\/strong> for an Irish picnic as opposed to an American one? Ribena, b\u2019fh\u00e9idir, in ionad l\u00edoman\u00e1ide<\/strong>?\u00a0 <\/span>For anyone curious about the absence, Ribena is almost unknown sna St\u00e1it<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span>This might be because cuir\u00edn\u00ed dubha<\/strong> (blackcurrants) almost died out in the U.S., having been banned for commercial farming because they could trigger a type of fungas<\/strong> on the more highly valued crop of crainn ph\u00e9ine<\/strong> (pine trees).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
