<\/span><strong>An iomarca teangacha a bhfuil \u201cbas\u201d (gan s\u00edneadh fada) mar fhocal acu, go m\u00f3r m\u00f3r, an Fhraincis<\/strong> (see <strong>gluais\u00edn th\u00edos<\/strong>, for vocab help).<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Next stop, minus the word \u201cbas,\u201d to eliminate the French and other languages.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>That brought me back to the <strong>m\u00f3rioml\u00e1n (<\/strong>grand total) of one result for \u201cB\u00e1s Michael Jackson\u201d as such. <span>\u00a0<\/span>Searching in the Irish version of Google didn\u2019t seem to make any difference.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">C\u00fapla strait\u00e9is eile<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">, a couple other strategies.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>How about using the \u201c<strong>gael\u00fa<\/strong>\u201d (gaelicization) of Jackson\u2019s name?<span>\u00a0 <\/span>But first, an explanation &#8212; names of celebrities and international figures are not usually gaelicized unless their bearer shows some precedent for doing so.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s generally true, even if they have Irish or partly Irish backgrounds.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><strong>Sampla gasta<\/strong>, a quick example, using Google hits as an admittedly rough frame of reference: \u201cBill Clinton,\u201d 23,700,000 (<strong>n\u00ed nach ionadh<\/strong>); \u201cWilliam Clinton,\u201d 356,000; \u201cWilliam Jefferson Clinton,\u201d 320,000, but for \u201c<strong>Liam Cliont\u00fan<\/strong>,\u201d the <strong>gael\u00fa<\/strong> of his name, the results were exactly <strong>tada<\/strong>, <strong>faic<\/strong>, <strong>a dhath ar bith<\/strong> \u2013 all Irish ways of saying \u201cnothing.\u201d<span>\u00a0 <\/span>And that\u2019s despite his <strong>d\u00fachas \u00c9ireannach<\/strong> (Irish heritage).<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, I\u2019m not saying here that no one has ever used the \u201c<strong>Liam Cliont\u00fan<\/strong>\u201d version of his name, just that it doesn\u2019t show up in a Googlable manner. <span>\u00a0<\/span>If the results had been, <strong>mar shampla<\/strong>, \u201cBill Clinton,\u201d 5, and \u201c<strong>Liam Cliont\u00fan<\/strong>, 0, then I\u2019d say, \u201ccompletely inconclusive.\u201d<span>\u00a0 <\/span>But at 23 <strong>milli\u00fan<\/strong>+ to <strong>n\u00e1id <\/strong>(0), I think we can safely say there\u2019s no formal precedent for saying \u201c<strong>Liam Cliont\u00fan<\/strong>\u201d when referring to <strong>iaruachtar\u00e1n na St\u00e1t Aontaithe<\/strong> (the former president of the United States), even if writing in Irish.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">For good measure, I even tried \u201c<strong>Liam<\/strong> Clinton,\u201d a hybrid version of the name, since some people are more comfortable changing their \u201c<strong>ainm baiste<\/strong>\u201d (given name) for use in Irish language classes or social contexts, but are less likely to adapt their surname, even informally.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<strong>Liam<\/strong> Clinton\u201d gave me about 155 hits, of which only a handful were actually about <strong>an tUachtar\u00e1n<\/strong>, the president.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>There are other Liam Clintons in the world who come up in the search, including one who was born in 2009.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>And most of the presidential references were due to glitches in wording, which meant that \u201cWil-liam Clinton\u201d (with word-break) would show up in my search for \u201c<strong>Liam<\/strong> Clinton,\u201d where \u201cWilliam Clinton\u201d would not.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>So much for that <strong>ascaill<\/strong> (avenue), or, to be more concise, <strong>sin sin<\/strong> (that\u2019s that).<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">There are some exceptions to not gaelicizing names, <strong>mar shampla<\/strong>, <strong>An Mh\u00e1thair Treasa<\/strong>, possibly triggered by the expected translation of the honorific, and <strong>Criost\u00f3ir Colambas<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">So, now back to M\u00edche\u00e1l Mac Siacais.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Did searching for the gaelicized version of his name bring up any abundance of commentary <strong>as Gaeilge<\/strong>? <span>\u00a0<\/span>Can\u2019t say it did.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I found a <strong>m\u00f3rioml\u00e1n<\/strong> of one actual article and two brief fan commentaries.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">I also tried searching for \u201c<strong>b\u00e1s Mh\u00edch\u00edl (Mh\u00edche\u00e1l) Mhic Shiacais<\/strong>,\u201d using the name in the genitive case (<strong>Mhic<\/strong> instead of <strong>Mac<\/strong>, etc.) figuring that anyone who cared enough about the <strong>\u00e1bhar<\/strong> (topic) to write about it in Irish might have gone ahead with the <strong>gael\u00fa<\/strong> anyway.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><strong>Glantoradh<\/strong> (net result), one repeat hit. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">OK, so this has gotten me through <strong>blag amh\u00e1in eile<\/strong> without even getting up to my intended project, a <strong>caps\u00falbheathaisn\u00e9is<\/strong>* of Jackson, <strong>as Gaeilge<\/strong>.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>So far, I\u2019ve only gotten through whether or not it made sense to refer to him as <strong>M\u00edche\u00e1l Mac Siacais<\/strong> (<strong>Mac Siac-\u00d3<\/strong>?).<span>\u00a0 <\/span>So the <strong>caps\u00falbheathaisn\u00e9is<\/strong> will have to wait for <strong>blag eile<\/strong>, and will be forthcoming, more on the \u201cforth-\u201c (sooner) side of things if I hear from readers that they are interested in the <strong>\u00e1bhar.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong>More on the farther side of \u201cforthcoming\u201d <strong>m\u00e1 chloisim<\/strong> (if I hear) <strong>tada, faic, a dhath ar bith uaibhse<\/strong> (from ye).<span>\u00a0 <\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>Even though my own musical taste is much more <strong>traidisi\u00fanta<\/strong>, I\u2019m happy to write about virtually any <span>\u00a0<\/span>I find no precedent for it online.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>But that is how new words get started.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Hint: <strong>beathaisn\u00e9is<\/strong> itself comes from <strong>beatha<\/strong>, life + <strong>faisn\u00e9is<\/strong>, information, i.e. biography.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>I didn\u2019t choose to say \u201c<strong>beathaisn\u00e9is chaps\u00fail<\/strong>,\u201d since to me that would sound more like the life story of a capsule (say what?), from being part of sheet of plastic to being a tablet filled with medicinal
