Now that\u2019s a useful Irish phrase to try to work into some comhr\u00e1<\/strong> at your next \u201cuair mhanglaim<\/strong>\u201d (cocktail hour).\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And finally, c\u00fapla pointe gramada\u00ed,<\/strong> for those who\u2019ve been missing it.\u00a0 <\/span>In the teideal<\/strong> for this blog, I used the phrase to indicate a woman\u2019s nationality; the context emphasizes the fact that an acting role is involved and that, to me, calls for the full phrase.\u00a0 <\/span>Typically, people don\u2019t use this form in casual conversation, as discussed in the previous blogs on nationality.\u00a0 <\/span>You may remember that the word \u201cIrishwoman\u201d is created by stating the nationality (\u00c9ireannach<\/strong>) followed by mn\u00e1<\/strong>, which is the possessive form of \u201cbean<\/strong>\u201d (woman).\u00a0 <\/span>This feminine noun is grammatically irregular, meaning, among other things, that its possessive form looks like its plural subject form, mn\u00e1.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Why possessive, anyway?\u00a0 <\/span>What\u2019s being possessed?\u00a0 <\/span>Nothing really.\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s \u201ccomplicated,\u201d as everyone\u2019s saying these days, but basically the rule is that nouns used \u201cattributively\u201d to modify other nouns are in the possessive (genitive) form in Irish; sometimes they can be made into prefixes also, but sin \u00c1.B.E.<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span>For nationality, the basic form of the noun (\u00c9ireannach, srl.)<\/strong> is inherently masculine and may be understood as gender-free in some contexts. \u00a0<\/span>But to truly say \u201cIrishwoman,\u201d one needs \u201cmn\u00e1<\/strong>\u201d at the end. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Pointe gramada\u00ed<\/span><\/strong> eile<\/strong>: \u201cagus<\/strong>\u201d (and) may be shortened to \u201cis<\/strong>,\u201d making it look like the Irish verb \u201cis<\/strong>\u201d [say: iss], which itself is similar to but not the same as the English verb \u201cis\u201d <\/strong>[say: izz].\u00a0 <\/span>With so much work done previously on stating nationalities, (Is Breatnach \u00e9, srl<\/strong>.), just clarifying here that this \u201cis<\/strong>\u201d really is the conjunction.\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
