The recent discussion of language, whether Tliong\u00e1inis<\/strong> or Fraincis<\/strong>, suggests another popular topic among language learners \u2013 what languages do you know?\u00a0 <\/span>Any such discussion can range from the standard questions to those off \u201can bealach buailte<\/strong>\u201d (the beaten track).\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes I do think that the bealach \u201cneamhbhuailte\u201d <\/strong>will be pretty well \u201cbuailte<\/strong>\u201d by the time I\u2019m done with it though!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A key point regarding these questions is the traditional structure: An bhfuil Gaeilge agat?<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span>Do you know Irish?\u00a0 <\/span>lit.\u00a0 <\/span>Is Irish at you?\u00a0 <\/span>This is the same basic structure used to show possession in Irish (cf. T\u00e1 carr agam<\/strong>, I have a car, lit. A car is at me).\u00a0 <\/span>Although I don\u2019t hear it so much lately, this notion of \u201chaving\u201d Irish also appears in English, in statements like, \u201cI haven\u2019t got the Irish.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s what Fiona says at one point to her seanathair<\/strong> in the film, The Secret of Roan Inish<\/em>, a film, which, by the way, has some great flashback scenes in Irish.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As for the \u201cthe\u201d in the phrase, \u201cI haven\u2019t got the Irish,\u201d it was traditional to use the definite article with language names, at least with Irish itself.\u00a0 <\/span>I don\u2019t hear that so much lately either.\u00a0 <\/span>If you do use the definite article, it will trigger lenition in many cases, as most language names are feminine (B\u00e9arla<\/strong>, for English, being one major exception).\u00a0 <\/span>For example: Fraincis, An Fhraincis; S\u00ednis, an tS\u00ednis <\/strong>(that’s the s -> ts variation of lenition, Ceatsuais, An Cheatsuais, <\/strong>but An B\u00e9arla, srl.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is, of course, perfectly reasonable to ask, An labhra\u00edonn t\u00fa Gaeilge?<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span>Do you speak Irish?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So, here are a few questions for starters. \u00a0<\/span>Can you figure what the languages are?\u00a0 <\/span>In most cases, the ending that indicates a language name is \u2013\u201cis\u201d <\/strong>or \u201c-ais<\/strong>.\u201d \u00a0<\/span>If anyone wants to send in some answers, it would be interesting to see what other languages are spoken by lucht lean\u00fana an bhlag seo<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
