In the last four blogs, we’ve practiced sentences like “I’m playing the fiddle” or “Mickey Hart is playing the drums.”\u00a0 Anois, cad f\u00fatsa?\u00a0 An seinneann tusa aon uirlis cheoil?\u00a0 An fhidil?\u00a0 An pian\u00f3?\u00a0 An giot\u00e1r?\u00a0 Na druma\u00ed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the previous four blogs, most of our sentences used the phrase “ag seinm<\/strong>,” which meant we had to adjust the ending of most of the words for the musical instruments (“fidle<\/strong>” in “ag seinm na fidle<\/strong>” instead of just “an fhidil<\/strong>” or “na ndruma\u00ed<\/strong>” [nuh NRUM-ee] instead of “na druma\u00ed<\/strong> [nuh DRUM-ee]”).<\/p>\n

In today’s blog, we’ll take a breather from an tuiseal ginideach<\/strong>, with all of those changes, and just deal with the basic noun.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 We don’t need an tuiseal ginideach<\/strong> to simply say, “I play the fiddle.”\u00a0 Sentences with “ag seinm na fidle<\/strong>” are structured differently, literally saying, “I am at (i.e. in the act of) the fiddle’s playing.”\u00a0 That usage requires an tuiseal ginideach<\/strong> (the genitive case), comparable to saying “luach na fidle<\/strong>” (the price of the fiddle) or “dath na fidle<\/strong>” (which, in the case of Eileen Ivers’ fiddle, would be “gorm<\/strong>“).\u00a0 So, to beat that example to a pulp, I could ask, “Cad \u00e9 dath na fidle goirme at\u00e1 ag Eileen Ivers<\/strong>?” and the answer would be “gorm, a dh\u00faram\u00e1in<\/strong>” (blue, you numbskull).\u00a0 Kind of like asking, “What color was George Washington’s white horse?” Bhuel<\/strong>, actually, though, in that case, the horse isn’t really white, but it looks white.\u00a0 Ach ceist na gceisteanna f\u00e9inl\u00e9ire, sin \u00e1bhar blag eile<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
