Lately we’ve been talking a lot about dath gruaige<\/strong> in Irish, including the following: rua, fionnrua, \u00f3rdhonn, donn, dubh, fionn, liath<\/strong>, and even, as in br\u00e9agfholt<\/strong> Phyllis Diller, gorm<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

We also practiced saying someone “has” a certain color hair in Irish.\u00a0 Remember, to say the person “has” that color hair, we don’t use a verb meaning “have” or “has.”\u00a0 We say that that color hair is “on” the person (T\u00e1 gruaig dhubh uirthi; T\u00e1 gruaig chatach dhubh ar Mh\u00e1ire Chatach; T\u00e1 gruaig rua ar Bozo an Fear Grinn; T\u00e1 gruaig ghorm ar Marge Simpson; T\u00e1 gruaig fhionn ar Jedward — ar bhealach — gruaig dhonn at\u00e1 orthu go n\u00e1d\u00fartha<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Today, let’s look at saying someone has a specific color beard.\u00a0 Beards, like hair, are “on you” in Irish.\u00a0 So we use the same set of forms we discussed last time: orm, ort, air, uirthi, orainn, oraibh, orthu<\/strong>, with “ar<\/strong>” for the basic “ar She\u00e1n<\/strong>,” etc.<\/p>\n

If we’re talking about one person, and therefore, one beard, the color term will change form (lenition), depending on what letter it begins with:<\/p>\n

adding “h” to show lenition: f\u00e9as\u00f3g fhionn, f\u00e9as\u00f3g dhubh, f\u00e9as\u00f3g dhonn<\/strong>, and, although I can’t say I ever recall hearing it used, “f\u00e9as\u00f3g fhionnrua<\/strong>” (strawberry blond)<\/p>\n

no “h” added: f\u00e9as\u00f3g liath, f\u00e9as\u00f3g rua<\/strong>, and, again, although it doesn’t sound real familiar, “f\u00e9as\u00f3g \u00f3rdhonn<\/strong>” (auburn)<\/p>\n

If we’re talking about beards (plural), there is no lenition: f\u00e9as\u00f3ga dubha,\u00a0f\u00e9as\u00f3ga donna, srl.\u00a0<\/strong>but you do need to remember to use the plural form of the adjective, if it has one (shown here with the “-a” endings.” \u00a0“Rua<\/strong>” does not, so there we’d just have “f\u00e9as\u00f3ga rua.” \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
