One last Christmas blog before the season really wraps up.\u00a0 For any teachers out there, especially of adult ed\/night school courses in the Irish language, this one could be a ready-made class activity.\u00a0 For some lesson objectives, please see N\u00f3ta a D\u00f3 (th\u00edos)<\/strong>. We’re building here on a previous blog (nasc th\u00edos<\/strong>) in which there was a matching game of Irish titles to English.\u00a0 This time we’ll also fill in some blanks, so there is even more of a d\u00fashl\u00e1n<\/strong> [doo-hlawn].<\/p>\n

    Freagra\u00ed,\u00a0<\/strong>and a reminder, so far I don’t know of any official Irish language versions of these movies.\u00a0 If you do, please write in and let us know.\u00a0 Often the final translation of a film title is drastically different from the original, as I recently happened to notice with the 2009 movie, The Joneses<\/em>, whose title in Spanish doesn’t mention “Jones” — it’s “Amor por contrato<\/em>.” \u00a0For the Scandinavian languages, we have “Den perfekte familien<\/em>” for Norwegian (no “Jones”) but “Familijen Jones<\/em>” for Swedish (includes “Jones”) — Go figure!\u00a0 I love reading the “akas” for movies at IMDb.com — I just wish more of them had Irish versions! \u00a0At any rate, if there are any official versions for the Christmas movies mentioned in this blog , they might be quite different from these suggestions. \u00a0These translations are basically for vocabulary practice and “le haghaidh an chraic<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

    I’ve added a few additional notes since the first version of this blog was posted.<\/p>\n

    1g. Sa Bhaile ina Aonar<\/strong>: Home Alone (Macaulay Culkin\u00a0mar “Chaoimh\u00edn Mac Alastair”<\/strong>);\u00a0baile<\/strong>: town, home;\u00a0aonar<\/strong>, alone, one person, lone person<\/p>\n

    2j. Nollaig Bh\u00e1n<\/strong>: White Christmas (Bing Crosby);\u00a0b\u00e1n<\/strong>, white, lenited to become “bh\u00e1n<\/strong>” [wawn OR vawn, depending on dialect] because “Nollaig<\/strong>” is feminine<\/p>\n

    3a. Is Iontach an Saol \u00c9<\/strong>: It’s a Wonderful Life (James Stewart);\u00a0iontach<\/strong>, wonderful;\u00a0saol<\/strong>, life, world<\/p>\n

    4i. An Nollaig i gConnecticut<\/strong>: Christmas in Connecticut (Barbara Stanwyck);\u00a0i gConnecticut<\/strong>: the “C” of “Connecticut” is eclipsed to become “gC” because it follows the word for “in” [say: ih gun-ET-ih-cut].\u00a0 Remember, the second “c” in Connecticut is silent anyway,\u00a0 due, somehow, to the word’s Mohican origin.<\/p>\n

    5f. Nollaig Sh\u00e9arlas de Br\u00fan<\/strong>: A Charlie Brown Christmas (Peter Robbins\u00a0mar ghuth Sh\u00e9arlais<\/strong>);\u00a0mar ghuth<\/strong>, as the voice;\u00a0Sh\u00e9arlais,<\/strong>\u00a0of Charles, but note the slight difference in “Nollaig Sh\u00e9arlas de Br\u00fan<\/strong>” (Christmas of Charles Brown — “Sh\u00e9arlas<\/strong>” here doesn’t have the letter “i” because we’ve added the surname.\u00a0 Actually I think that if this is released in Irish (or has already been?), they’ll probably just call it “Nollaig Charlie Brown<\/strong>,” for the sake of recognition, but I think it’s good to at least practice using the full Irish version of the name.\u00a0 \u00a0As for the nuance of the “a” in the English title, it’s complicated ach f\u00e9ach an n\u00f3ta th\u00edos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    6b. An Tromlu\u00ed roimh an Nollaig<\/strong>: The Nightmare before Christmas (Danny Elfman);\u00a0tromlu\u00ed\u00a0<\/strong>[trum-lee], a nightmare<\/p>\n

    7c. Bean an Easpaig:<\/strong> The Bishop’s Wife (Cary Grant);\u00a0easpag<\/strong>, bishop;\u00a0easpaig<\/strong>, of a bishop; an easpaig<\/strong>, of the bishop; as for bishops having wives, please remember,\u00a0ba easpag Easpag\u00f3ideach \u00e9 an t-easpag sa scann\u00e1n seo.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    9e. Sc\u00e9al Nollag<\/strong>: A Christmas Story (Peter Billingsley); to get the sense of “a” Christmas story, we drop the word for “the” in Irish, leaving us with simply “Sc\u00e9al Nollag<\/strong>.”\u00a0 If we said “Sc\u00e9al na Nollag<\/strong>,” it would most likely be interpreted as the story about “saol\u00fa Chr\u00edost<\/strong>.”\u00a0 And remember, “Nollag<\/strong>” (no “i”) for “of Christmas,” but “(an) Nollaig<\/strong>” (with “i”) as the basic form of the word.<\/p>\n

    10h. Traein Luais an Phoil Thuaidh<\/strong>: The Polar Express (Tom Hanks);\u00a0traein luais<\/strong>\u00a0[tray-in LOO-ish] means “express train;” you might recognize “luais<\/strong>” (lit. “of speed”) from “Luas<\/strong>,” the Dublin light rail tram system.\u00a0 There are actually two phrases for the “North Pole” in Irish:\u00a0An Pol Thuaidh<\/strong>\u00a0[un pol HOO-ee], and amazingly, but coincidentally similar,\u00a0An Mol Thuaidh<\/strong>\u00a0[un mol HOO-ee].\u00a0 Here I’ve used the first one, and put it in the possessive form, with\u00a0the initial “ph-,” which sounds like “f.”<\/p>\n
