OK, so that’s really “tr\u00ed ainm d\u00e9ag<\/strong>” but five name “families”, so I stuck with using “five” in the title of this blogpost, since it matches the format of the recent other entries in this series (naisc th\u00edos<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

If anyone has some further suggestions for names based on flowers, I’d love to hear from you.\u00a0 There are a few names which are related to trees, some a little indirectly, so that might be another blog topic for the future.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, our names for the day, with a very basic explanation, follow.\u00a0 Each grouping will get a little more detail below, unless I run out of space, that is.\u00a0 In that case, this blogpost, like many of its predecessors, will have a “cuid a d\u00f3”<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Bl\u00e1th \/ Bl\u00e1ith\u00edn \/ Bl\u00e1thnaid<\/strong> – based on “bl\u00e1th<\/strong>” (flower)<\/p>\n

Daifne \/ Dafnae<\/strong> – from the flower and the Greek “naiad”<\/em> (“n\u00e1iad<\/strong>” or “nimfeach uisc<\/strong>e” in Irish)<\/p>\n

Lil \/ Lile<\/strong> – from “lile<\/strong>” (a lily)<\/p>\n

N\u00f3in\u00edn<\/strong> – the Irish word for “daisy”<\/p>\n

R\u00f3is\u00edn \/ R\u00f3is \/ R\u00f3ise<\/strong> – all based on “r\u00f3s<\/strong>” (a rose), but note that the regular word for the actual flower is “r\u00f3s<\/strong>” [rohss] with a broad “s,”\u00a0 not a slender “s” as in “R\u00f3ise<\/strong>” [ROH-shuh] or the derivatives<\/p>\n

and I “sort of” add “Maighr\u00e9ad” \/ “Mair\u00e9ad”<\/strong> because some people say it means “daisy” and other people say it means “pearl,” which is probably a s\u00e1ga<\/strong> unto itself, and will probably end up in a blogpost of its own, not today’s.\u00a0 Even if we don’t solve the meaning of the name Marguerite, we can at least discuss the Irish for “pearl” and the Irish for “daisy”!<\/p>\n

Anyway, let’s start with the Bl\u00e1th \/ Bl\u00e1ith\u00edn \/ Bl\u00e1thnaid<\/strong> group.\u00a0 We’ll actually begin with “Bl\u00e1ith\u00edn<\/strong>” and “Bl\u00e1thnaid<\/strong>,” since, in my experience, they are more widely used as names than “Bl\u00e1th<\/strong>” itself.<\/p>\n

Bl\u00e1ith\u00edn<\/strong> [BLAW-heen], with “Bl\u00e1ith\u00edne<\/strong>” as a variant (not very common, i mo thaith\u00ed f\u00e9in<\/strong>).\u00a0 Not often anglicized, that I’ve seen, but it can be, as “Blaheen.”\u00a0 I see a few, but not many, Blaheens online, one of them being a race horse (nasc th\u00edos<\/strong>).\u00a0\u00a0 It means “little flower,” with the “-\u00edn” diminutive ending.<\/p>\n

direct address: “A Bhl\u00e1ith\u00edn!<\/strong> [uh VLAW-heen]<\/p>\n

possessive: Bhl\u00e1ith\u00edn<\/strong> [VLAW-heen], of Blaheen, of Bl\u00e1ith\u00edn (breithl\u00e1 Bhl\u00e1ith\u00edn<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

Two prominent examples of this name are comedian Bl\u00e1ith\u00edn de B\u00farca (see her Facebook page for more) and, with some concessions to the lack of diacritical marks in English, the journalist Blathin de Paor (rsvpmagazine.com).<\/p>\n

Next in our list:<\/p>\n

Bl\u00e1thnaid<\/strong> [BLAW-nidj], Florence, means ” little flower,” with “-naid” being the diminutive ending.\u00a0 There is actually another word “bl\u00e1thnaid<\/strong>” that means “a female stoat,” but somehow I don’t think that’s what most parents have in mind when they name their daughter “Bl\u00e1thnaid<\/strong>.”\u00a0 This name may be spelled “Bl\u00e1naid<\/strong>” or anglicized as “Blanid<\/strong>,” but I haven’t seen either of those very often.<\/p>\n

I’m intrigued by the fact that Gaelic (G\u00e0idhlig<\/em>) has “Floireans<\/em>,” “Fl\u00f2ra<\/em>,” “and “Fl\u00f2raidh<\/em>,” as names for girls, but a quick glance through some Scottish sources doesn’t show me any names based on “bl\u00e0th<\/em>,” the equivalent word in that language.\u00a0\u00a0 Hmmm?\u00a0 A Albanacha<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

possessive: Bhl\u00e1thnaide<\/strong> [VLAW-nidj-uh], of Bl\u00e1thnaid; (bl\u00e1thanna Bhl\u00e1thnaide<\/strong>) — couldn’t resist that combo!<\/p>\n

Two variations of this name, spelled “Bl\u00e1thnat<\/strong>” or “Bl\u00e1thine<\/strong>”\u00a0 in their Old Irish forms, occur in the story of C\u00fa Chulainn, where she is one of his lovers.<\/p>\n

And finally for Bl\u00e1th<\/strong> itself:<\/p>\n

Bl\u00e1th<\/strong> [blaw], Flora; means “flower”<\/p>\n

direct address: A Bhl\u00e1th<\/strong>! [uh vlaw!]<\/p>\n

possessive: Bl\u00e1ithe<\/strong> [BLAW-hy<\/sup>uh], of Flora, of Bl\u00e1th.\u00a0 This could become “Bhl\u00e1ithe<\/strong>” in actual use, but I can’t actually find any example of this name in the possessive form, online or in a quick search of my home library, in a natural context, so the usage is actually a little unclear.\u00a0 At any rate, this possessive form is noticeably different from the possessive form of the word for “flower” itself, which, in contemporary Irish, at least, is “bl\u00e1tha<\/strong>” [BLAW-huh], as in “peiteal bl\u00e1tha<\/strong>” (a flower petal).\u00a0 To be grammatical about it, “Bl\u00e1th<\/strong>” as a name is a second-declension noun while “bl\u00e1th<\/strong>” as a general noun is a third-declension noun.\u00a0 Which may have just made your day.\u00a0 It did mine, anyway.\u00a0 How often can the same basic word be in two declensions?<\/p>\n

It seems to me that there’s a lot of leeway for this name to overlap with the noun “bl\u00e1ithe<\/strong>,” meaning “smoothness,” “beauty,” “elegance,” or “delicacy,” but I don’t see anyone actually deriving a girl’s name this way, so maybe this idea will remain as pure speculation.\u00a0 Simply a nice coincidence?\u00a0 Bar\u00falacha agaibhse?<\/strong><\/p>\n
