Since we’ve dealt with so many flowers in recent blogs, either as ainmneacha cail\u00edn\u00ed (Bl\u00e1ith\u00edn, N\u00f3in\u00edn, srl.)<\/strong> or as the flowers themselves (N\u00f3in\u00edn\u00ed, Caisearbh\u00e1in, Cama an Ime, srl.)<\/strong>, I thought it would be fun to look for film titles that have a similar theme.\u00a0 So in this blogpost we have 30 titles of movies, which I’ve translated into Irish, leaving a blank for the flower term.\u00a0 Most of them are quite well known films, and I’ve included the year, and a key feature (like star, author, or genre), to help.\u00a0 As you work on them, remember to keep in mind if the word should be plural or possessive, or, Irish being Irish, whether it has an initial mutation, like s\u00e9imhi\u00fa<\/strong> or ur\u00fa<\/strong>.\u00a0 T\u00e1 s\u00fail agam go mbainfidh t\u00fa sult as.\u00a0 Beidh na freagra\u00ed sa ch\u00e9ad bhlagmh\u00edr eile.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In two cases, it’s actually a form of the word “flower” not a specific type of flower that’s involved.\u00a0 And one answer is actually a part<\/em> of a flower, not a type of flower.<\/p>\n

In a few cases, more than one date is given, because the film was remade.\u00a0 But in most cases, I avoided na leaganacha athdh\u00e9anta<\/strong> because sometimes they’re not really the same story at all, just the teideal<\/strong> and maybe ainmneacha na bpearsana<\/strong> being recycled.<\/p>\n

I also mostly avoided cases where the flower is simply used as a girl’s or woman’s name.\u00a0 I tried to emphasize those where bl\u00e1thann<\/strong>a are actually part of the t\u00e9ama<\/strong>, either literally or abstractly or symbolically.<\/p>\n

If there are two blanks, the flower name requires two words in Irish (not necessarily in English).\u00a0 This can happen constantly when we compare two languages, by the way — one simple example would be “Belfast” in English (one word) and “B\u00e9al Feirste<\/strong>” in Irish (two words).<\/p>\n

BTW, I tried to find an actual Irish language film with a flower in its name, but I couldn’t think of any.\u00a0\u00a0 An f\u00e9idir leatsa smaoineamh ar shampla ar bith?<\/strong>\u00a0 It seems like there should be something about roses, but nothing came to mind.\u00a0 We have “R\u00f3is\u00edn\u00ed<\/strong>” go leor<\/strong> in song and story, but the word doesn’t seem to show up in film titles, fad m’eolais<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
