By Tom Purves from Toronto, canada [CC BY 2.0 (http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons<\/em><\/p><\/div>As we approach two major holiday seasons, L\u00e1 an Altaithe (i Meirice\u00e1)<\/strong> and An Nollaig (go hidirn\u00e1isi\u00fanta)<\/strong>, many people will be traveling great distances to spend time with their families (a dteaghlaigh<\/strong>).\u00a0 So let’s take break from looking at leasghaolta<\/strong> (steprelationships), as we’ve done in the recent blogposts, and look at the broader picture\u00a0 — t\u00e9arma\u00ed gaoil go ginear\u00e1lta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So here’s\u00a0 fairly comprehensive list in Irish, with the English equivalents in the word bank (an banc focal<\/strong>).\u00a0 I haven’t tried to include all the dialect terms for grandparents, as we’ve been discussing recently, partly since the list is already pretty long and partly since, in my experience, “seanmh\u00e1thair<\/strong>” tends to be used more than “m\u00e1thair mh\u00f3r<\/strong>” or “m\u00e1thair chr\u00edonna<\/strong>” for formal purposes, and “mam\u00f3<\/strong>” is more of a nickname.\u00a0 I’m also not going to try to include all the numerous variations for the same term (“m\u00e1thair mo ch\u00e9ile<\/strong>” for “mo\u00a0mh\u00e1thair ch\u00e9ile<\/strong>,” “mac mo mhic<\/strong>” for “mo<\/strong>\u00a0gharmhac<\/strong>,” srl<\/strong>.).\u00a0 Additionally, I’ve left out some terms which existed traditionally but for which there is a more specific word or phrase today, for example: using “dearth\u00e1ir leasghaolmhar<\/strong>” (step-related brother) for “leathdhearth\u00e1ir<\/strong>” (half-brother) seems unnecessarily confusing to me, especially when there’s a specific term, “leathdhearth\u00e1ir<\/strong>” available and the similar-looking word “leasdearth\u00e1ir<\/strong>” means “step-brother.”\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Adding all those variations would probably make this list at least twice as long.<\/p>\n

Since a lot of these terms may be familiar, the “banc foca<\/strong>l” comes second in the layout of today’s post.\u00a0 You might like to see how many you can complete\u00a0without checking the “banc focal<\/strong>.”\u00a0 The freagra\u00ed,<\/strong> as usual, are th\u00edos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally, at least for L\u00e1 an Altaithe (i Meirice\u00e1)<\/strong>, we could list “Tom Turca\u00ed<\/strong>” as our “aoi oinigh<\/strong>” (guest of honor).<\/p>\n

Creating this list has also set me wondering how we would indicate our siblings if we were a triplet, a quadruplet, or a quintuplet, etc.\u00a0 None of the English terms sound very familiar to me, although Googling them, I find they do exist, reasonably abundantly:\u00a0 triplet sister, quadruplet brother, etc.\u00a0 If we have “leathch\u00fapla dearth\u00e1r\/deirf\u00e9ar<\/strong>” for “twin brother\/sister” in Irish, then in theory we could have “tr\u00edr\u00edn dearth\u00e1r\/deirf\u00e9ar<\/strong>,” for “triplet brother\/sister.”\u00a0 Or would we literally follow the pattern of “leathch\u00fapla dearth\u00e1r<\/strong>” (lit. half-of-twin brother) and have ” *triantr\u00edr\u00edn deirf\u00e9ar<\/strong>” (a third-of-triplet sister)?\u00a0 Couldn’t find any answers by online searches.\u00a0 Hmm, food for thought!\u00a0 At any rate, we’d still be carefully using an tuiseal ginideach<\/strong> for the brother\/sister part — that accounts for the “-\u00e1r” and “-f\u00e9ar” endings.\u00a0 No escaping the genitive case, it seems!<\/p>\n

Anyway, whether you’re celebrating with your “teaghlach n\u00faicl\u00e9ach”<\/strong> or your “teaghlach s\u00ednte<\/strong>,” or a “gr\u00fapa cairde,” b\u00edodh am bre\u00e1 agat leo, fi\u00fa m\u00e1 bh\u00edonn beag\u00e1in\u00edn allagair ann \u00f3 am go ham!\u00a0 — SGF — R\u00f3isl\u00edn<\/strong><\/p>\n
