2)) sneachta<\/strong>: snow.\u00a0 Typically used in a sentence like “T\u00e1 s\u00e9 ag cur sneachta<\/strong>” (It’s snowing, lit. It’s “putting” snow).\u00a0 A little more dramatically, one might hear “ag pl\u00fachadh sneachta<\/strong>” (snowing heavily).<\/p>\n

3)) flichshneachta<\/strong>: sleet (fliuch<\/strong>, wet + sneachta<\/strong>, snow).\u00a0 Which, just to tantalize the mind, has at least two variants: flithshneachta<\/strong> and fleathshneachta<\/strong>.\u00a0 Why is this making me think of “Snip, Snap, Snorem?”\u00a0 And “Snipp, Snapp, Snurr”?\u00a0 \u00a0Hmmm, tripartite variations on a theme?\u00a0 Well, those three boys, Snipp, Snapp, and Snurr were Sualannach<\/strong> (Swedish), so I’m sure they had plenty of encounters with sneachta<\/strong>.\u00a0 And probably flichshneachta<\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n

4)) cloichshneachta<\/strong>: hail.\u00a0 Hailstones themselves would be clocha sneachta<\/strong>.\u00a0 Notice that the lenition (shown by the inserted “h”) in “cloch shneachta<\/strong>” is gone, since we’re now dealing with the singular form of the noun (i.e. a single hailstone), not “hailstones.”<\/p>\n

And of course, there are subdivisions, like “draon\u00e1n b\u00e1ist\u00ed<\/strong>” (drizzly rain) and “b\u00e1isteach cheathach<\/strong>” (showery rain) and “fuarlach b\u00e1ist\u00ed<\/strong>” (torrential rain) and “guairne\u00e1n sneachta<\/strong>” (flurry of snow), but to attempt to cover all of those would be too much for one blogpost.<\/p>\n

It’s also probably worth mentioning frost here, although it doesn’t strike me as “precipitation” as such, since it doesn’t fall from the sky.\u00a0 At any rate, it’s “sioc<\/strong>,” often showing up in the phrase “ag cur seaca<\/strong>” (freezing, lit. “putting frost”).<\/p>\n
