class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">The style=\"font-family: Arial\">Hmm, that would actually be a tricky (<strong>\u00fa\u00faps!<\/strong>) costume to create, wouldn\u2019t it?\u00a0 How would people know you were a werewolf and not just a regular wolf?\u00a0 Maybe a costume that was \u201c<strong>leathchonriocht<\/strong>\u201d agus \u201c<strong>leathdhuine<\/strong>\u201d (half werewolf, half human), a sort of a \u201c<strong>smutmhadra<\/strong>\u201d (pug dog) the other day:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><strong>T\u00e1 an smutmhadra ina phuimc\u00edn<\/strong> \u00a0(if the dog is male) or <strong>T\u00e1 an smutmhadra ina puimc\u00edn<\/strong> (if the dog is female).<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Please do note the pronunciation of the first part of the compound word for \u201cpug.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 The \u201cu\u201d is like the sound in English \u201cput\u201d or \u201cbook,\u201d not as in \u201cputt\u201d (in golf) or \u201cbuck.\u201d\u00a0 And please keep in mind that the compound \u201c<strong>smutmhadra<\/strong>\u201d literally means \u201cstump-dog\u201d or \u201csnout-dog\u201d\u00a0 The first element may look like English, but that is, in this case, sheer coincidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">If you\u2019re trying to put a <strong>culaith<\/strong> on your cat, I\u2019d say, <strong>\u201c\u00c1dh m\u00f3r!\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve also seen costumes for <strong>pear\u00f3id\u00ed<\/strong>, but have never actually seen a parrot wearing one.\u00a0 <strong>Tusa?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">And \u201c<strong>mar fhocal scoir<\/strong>\u201d for this topic, all of these questions imply a temporary state.\u00a0 That is, you\u2019re not permanently a devil, even though you\u2019re wearing a devil costume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">If you\u2019re truly and inherently a vampire or if your pug is truly and inherently a pumpkin, you\u2019d use the linking verb and say \u201c<strong>Is vaimp\u00edr m\u00e9<\/strong>\u201d (I\u2019m a vampire) or \u201c<strong>Is puimc\u00edn \u00e9 an smutmhadra sin<\/strong>\u201d (That pug is a pumpkin).\u00a0 The first of those sentences might be reasonably useful, depending on what kind of company you hang out with.\u00a0 The second one is a stretch, at least as I understand <strong>eiseadh <\/strong>(existence).\u00a0 Perhaps we should say, <strong>\u201cIs smutmadra \u00e9 an puimc\u00edn sin\u201d <\/strong>[That pumpkin is (actually) a pug].\u00a0 To me, that would suggest that some wizard had transformed a pug into a pumpkin and you were pointing this out, since most people would think the pumpkin was simply a pumpkin.\u00a0 But if you wanted to imply that the pumpkin could be transformed back into a pug, you could say, \u201c<strong>T\u00e1 an puimc\u00edn sin ina <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><strong>smutmhadra<\/strong>\u201d (That pumpkin is a pug).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Of course, if your sense of identity with your costumed persona is really strong, you could use the \u201c<strong>is<\/strong>\u201d verb as well. \u00a0But if you wanted to say \u201cI\u2019m a vampire tonight, but if you want to know my job, I\u2019m a programmer,\u201d you\u2019d say:\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><strong>T\u00e1 m\u00e9 i mo vaimp\u00edr anocht ach m\u00e1 t\u00e1 t\u00fa ag iarraidh a fh\u00e1il amach c\u00e9n post at\u00e1 agam, is cl\u00e1raitheoir m\u00e9.<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Whatever you choose to say with the Irish verb \u201c<strong>is<\/strong>,\u201d remember that it is pronounced like \u201chiss\u201d or \u201cmiss,\u201d not like its English look-alike, \u201cis,\u201d which is pronounced
