A Mysterious Christmas Present Posted by on Dec 27, 2016 in Uncategorized

Some Christmas presents are more memorable than others. My first memorable one was given to me when I was about four years old.

Photo by Geoff.

That Christmas morning I woke up and didn’t find anybody in the bedrooms, neither my brothers nor my parents. So I went into the living room where the Christmas tree was, and underneath it there were many beautiful boxes. The room was quiet, the door between the living room and the dining room was closed, and from behind it I could hear some adults’ voices: we had guests.

I began to explore the Christmas presents and I chose one in particular, probably because it was the biggest one, I don’t remember very well. Carefully I unwrapped it (it didn’t have ribbons, only some paper), and then opened the box. Inside there was a strange plastic animal, a sort of bird with a massive beak and blue wings.

E io l’avevo rotto!
I couldn’t understand what it was and how it worked, so after several attempts to make it do something I put it down on the floor and stepped on it. The wings opened suddenly and a strange sound came out. Scared, I had a sudden doubt: what if that present wasn’t for me but for one of my brothers instead or, what if Father Christmas had even left it there by mistake and it was for another child? And I had broken it!

Worried, I put it back in its box and wrapped it in the paper as best as I could, then with the air of a little angel I went into the dining room pretending I’d just woken up. My mother was in there drinking coffee with uncle Alberto. They gave me a warm welcome and then they asked if I had already opened my presents. Looking all innocent I replied that I hadn’t. My mother told me to go and open them. I immediately pointed to the offending box and with my heart pounding asked if I could open that one. To my great relief mum said yes, that it was for me. An enormous weight lifted off my chest!

I was told that the strange bird was a pelican, and if I pulled it along with the rope it would begin to walk, move its wings, open its beak and produce sounds. Well, the poor pelican was very sturdy, not only did it survive my feet and follow me around for a long time tied to the rear of my tricycle, but it was even inherited by my brother Francesco.

Solamente alcune parole nuovo da me. Grazie!

  2. Maximus:

    Should it be ‘hear” rather than ‘here’, and perhaps ‘began’ instead of ‘begun’?

    Un bel racconto!

    Ho una domanda sul plurale nell’espressione “mi fecero le feste”. I dizionari ne non sono d’accordo. Uno (di Oxford) dice che in questo significato, si usa “la festa” mentre “le feste” si usa di cani. Ma il de Mauro afferma che “fare la festa a qcn” significa “uccidere”. E’ per evitare questa significazione che si usa il plurale?

    • Serena:

      @Maximus Salve Maximus!
      ‘Fare la festa a qualcuno’ è un comune eufemismo per ‘uccidere’
      ‘Fare le feste’ vuol dire ‘accogliere festosamente’ tipico dei cani, ma anche degli adulti verso i bambini, per esempio.
      Comunque ecco qui quello che dice il Vocabolario Treccani alla 2c sotto la voce ‘festa’:
      c. Locuzioni: fare festa, fare un po’ di f., essere in festa, divertirsi, fare allegria; fare festa a qualcuno, accoglierlo festosamente, e così fargli gran festa, fargli le f., tante f., molte f. (anche detto di animali domestici, come per es. il cane che dimostra la propria contentezza per il ritorno del padrone o che accoglie con manifestazioni di simpatia una persona); fare festa a una cosa, gradirla moltissimo; ma fare la f. a qualcuno, o a un animale (soprattutto animali da cortile), ammazzarlo, oppure, riferito a persona, conciarlo male, ridurlo in cattivo stato; con lo stesso sign. anche conciare per le feste, o per il dì delle f.; fare la f. a una ragazza, toglierle la verginità; fare la f. a una cosa, consumarla: fare la f. al panettone; è f. finita, l’affare è chiuso; iron., è finita la f.!, per dire che si è concluso un momento piacevole.

      • Maximus:

        @Serena Grazie, Serena!

        Forse sarebbe meglio usare “le feste” per evitare eventuali fraintendimenti, tipo, “mio padre ti ha fatto la festa?”

        Una volta ho detto che un mio amico era scomparso. Volevo dire che se n’è andato e non sapevo dove. Nella mia mente americana, he disappeared. Ma la reazione è stata diversa da quello che mi aspettavo.
