Big news: I’ve moved to Europe and so I’ve been spending a lot of time with some administrative tasks lately. One of which included opening a bank account, so let’s read about some banking vocabulary in Italy.

La maggior parte delle banche chiede: 

• documento di identità
• codice fiscale 

In alcuni casi può essere necessario fornire alla banca anche un certificato di residenza. Il resto delle informazioni (domicilio, residenza, professione, nucleo famigliare ecc.) vengono richieste verbalmente.

Most banks ask:

• identity document
• fiscal code (tax code, similar to a social security number)

In some cases, it may also be necessary to provide the bank with a residence certificate. The rest of the information (home, residence, profession, household, etc.) is requested verbally.

Some fees that may be associated with an account:

• costi di apertura (chiusura): le spese richieste dalla banca per l’attivazione o la disattivazione del conto corrente
• costi di gestione: il canone mensile previsto per il mantenimento del conto corrente
• costi operativi: le commissioni che scattano quando effettui dei pagamenti (carta, bonifici, ecc.), prelievi e altro ancora

• opening (closing) costs: the costs required by the bank for the activation or deactivation of the current account;
• management costs: the monthly fee for maintaining the current account;
• operating costs: the commissions that are triggered when you make payments (card, wire transfers, etc.), withdrawals and more.

Can I use this credit card in your ATM? – Posso usare questa carta di credito nel vostro bancomat?
I would like to buy some traveler’s checks. – Vorrei comprare qualche travelers cheque.
Where is the closest ATM located? – Dove si trova il bancomat più vicino?
Where can I exchange money? – Dove posso cambiare i soldi?
I want to exchange only… dollars. – Voglio cambiare solo… dollari.
Can I exchange money here? – Posso cambiare i soldi qui?
I would like to cash my traveler’s check. – Vorrei convertire il mio travelers cheque.
