Italian Quiz – September 2015 – The Solutions Posted by on Sep 18, 2015 in Culture, Italian Language

This blog is dedicated to Elaine, the only person in the whole wide world who had a go at our September quiz! Elaine, when you come to Pontremoli you can collect your prize: a beverage of your choice at a local bar, okay?
As for the rest of you …. no treats for you! We would however appreciate your feedback. Was the quiz too easy, too hard, boring, irrelevant etc.? Please let us know.

September’s quiz was based on the theme of animals. Let’s see how you did, shall we Elaine?

incidente

Heard of cows?

Fit the following collective names into the unfinished sentences below:

uno sciame
un gregge
uno stormo
una mandria
un branco
un banco

un gruppo di mucche si chiama una mandria (a group of cows is called a herd)
un gruppo di pesci si chiama un banco (a group of fish is called a school)
un gruppo di pecore si chiama un gregge (a group of sheep is called a flock)
un gruppo di lupi si chiama un branco (a group of wolves is called a pack)
un gruppo di uccelli si chiama uno stormo (a group of birds is called a flock)
un gruppo di api si chiama uno sciame (a group of bees is called a swarm)

Old MacDonald Had A Farm

Fit the sounds verbs below to the correct animals:

miagolare
cinguettare
abbaiare
ruggire
nitrire
ragliare

cavallo = nitrire
cane = abbaiare
uccello = cinguettare
gatto = miagolare
asino = ragliare
leone = ruggire

Now conjugate the infinitives of each sound to complete the sentences below:

il cavallo nitrisce (the horse whinnies)
i cani abbaiano (the dogs bark)
l’uccello cinguettava tutto il giorno (the bird twittered all day) N.B. this is a continuous action, so it’s best to use the imperfect tense
l’asino raglia (the donkey brays)
i leoni ruggiscono (the lions roar)

Pavlov’s Dog

Illaria

Ilaria Del Carretto

Which animals are associated with the following people?:

Proverbs

Complete the following proverbs and common sayings by inserting the correct animals.

elefante
piccioni
ghiro
talpa
buoi
maiale

mettere il carro davanti ai buoi  (English version: put the horse before the cart)
muoversi come un elefante in una cristalleria (English version: to move like a bull in a china shop)
cieco come una talpa (English version: as blind as a bat)
prendere due piccioni con una fava (English version: kill two birds with one stone)
sudare come un maiale (English version: to sweat like a pig)
dormire come un ghiro (English version: to sleep like a log)

Suggestions for a theme for next month’s quiz are welcome.

  1. Anne:

    dg

  3. Evelyn Ferioli:

Sorry, somehow I missed the quiz. Worked through it this morning. After studing Italian for 20 years, I can not believe how many words I did not know. Will study them. Thank you

  4. Cindy Bigras:

  5. Carole:

Sorry I missed it, but it didn’t come through normal channels. Maybe it happened to others as well, no doubt due to the change over. I found it when trying out the different links at the bottom of the page for your later blog.

I did know quite a few of the answers, but there was a lot to learn so that was excellent.

  6. Elaine:

Mamma Mia!

    Mille grazie.

  9. Chippy:

OK, so I was wrong that I’d seen answers to the September quiz. I was remembering the August one!! Sorry!! However, like Evelyn and June, I never did receive the September quiz, so please take us off your ‘Bad students’ list !!! Will try to find time to have a go at it over the weekend.

    • Geoff:

@Chippy Don’t worry Chippy, we don’t really keep a ‘bad students list’. 😉

  10. Geoff:

Hmmmm, I did suspect that some of you may not have seen the quiz. In fact I even re-published it on Wednesday … just in case.

Unfortunately we were only informed of the changes at the last moment, immediately after we’d published the article, so I think that it may have got lost in cyber space.

The positive side of the changes is that it should now be easier to respond via a direct link for those of you who get the e-mail version of our blog.

    A presto Geoff.

  11. Vicki:

I loved the quiz! I just simply didn’t have time. I will try to make time next time however. I really appreciate your blog, I have learned a lot!

    Grazie tanti!

    Vicki

    • Geoff:

Grazie.

  14. Joan Engelhaupt:

Per me, era troppo dificile, ma interesante nonostante.

  15. Davide Nelms:

    Come su alcune espressioni colloquiali?
    Cordiali saluti.
    Davide

    • Geoff:

Cosa volevi dire?

      Saluti da Geoff

  16. Chippy:

Mmm, anch’io ho trovato lo quiz molto difficile (I never did find the questions alone but read through them above with the answers as given to Elaine) Devo aumentare il mio vocabolario!!

Grazie a Transparent Language!

  17. Mike Rose:

    Good evening Geoff,
We stopped receiving your excellent blogs after the blog “Perdindirindina…What the…” on the 11th September. We thought you may have run into trouble with what you published. But looking at the Trtansparent site there appears to be a problem. What do we do to continue receiving your blogs?
    Mike Rose (South Wales)

  18. Christine Barbieri Sims:

Really enjoying your blog! Really loved “sudare come un maiale”! Another phrase my Mother would use frequently with us when we did not understand was “Si capisce lucciole per lanterne!”.

  19. Bill:
