La Lista Della Spesa Posted by on Oct 16, 2017 in Vocabulary

When you’re learning a language you need to use every opportunity to reinforce and internalise the grammar and vocabulary.

Sometime, the most mundane of tasks can help you achieve this objective, such as writing una lista della spesa (a shopping list). Who knows, it might even make your shopping experience a little bit more fun!

Why not set yourself the task of writing your lists in Italian? And don’t just write a simple list of commodities to buy, add in a few useful phrases, such as:

Oggi devo comprare … = Today I have to buy …

Devo andare dal fruttivendolo, pescivendolo, panettiere ecc. = I must go to the greengrocer, fishmonger, baker, etc.
Devo andare in pasticceria, banca, farmacia, ecc. = I must go to the pastry shop, bank, chemist, etc.
Devo andare al mercato, supermercato = I must go to the market, supermarket.

= I must pop to the greengrocer, fishmonger, baker, etc.
Devo fare un salto in farmacia, banca, posta, pasticceria ecc. = I must pop to the chemist, bank, post office, pastry shop, etc.
Devo fare un salto al mercato, supermercato = I must pop to the market, supermarket.

Devo passare dal fruttivendolo, pescivendolo, panettiere ecc. = I must go by the greengrocer, fishmonger, baker, etc.
Devo passare in banca, pasticceria, farmacia, ecc. = I must go by the bank, chemist, pastry shop, etc.
Devo passare al mercato, supermercato = I must go by the market, supermarket.

Mi serve …/Mi servono … = I need … singular/plural
Ho bisogno di … = I need …

  2. Kim:

Grazie!

  3. Alexander:

What’s an “un limone non trattato”?
The trattato part is what I don’t understand.

    • Geoff:

@Alexander Ciao Alexander, un limone non trattato = an untreated (unwaxed) lemon!
Usually, shops and supermarkets treat lemons with chemicals to make them look nice and shiny. Obviously, this is not good news if you want to use the rind. Hence we always buy i limoni non trattati.

      Buona giornata! 🙂

  4. kristine:

Are there rules for when to use “dal”, “in”, or “al”? I know you say “Vado dal macellaio” but say “vado in macelleria” but cannot figure out why. Or is this just one of those things you just have to learn by rote? Grazie.

    • Serena:

      @kristine Salve Kristine!
