L’Italia in Cinque Parole – aggiornamento Posted by on May 12, 2010 in Uncategorized

Rimanete sintonizzati!

A big thanks to all those who have contributed to my blog ‘L’Italia in Cinque Parole’. We’ve received a tide of responses, many more than we expected: fantastic! The Italians on the other hand are much more cautious in giving a definitive response, they are afraid of compromising themselves (a typically Italian trait). Now we are compiling a list of all of your definitions so that we can publish them alongside the list of words from the Italians. Within the next few days you will know the results. Stay tuned!

In the meantime, to keep you busy, here are a couple of photos of our new pet who we discovered in our wood pile a couple of days ago. The first one, which shows it exploring Geoff’s hand, gives you an idea of its size (Geoff has big hands!). Does anyone know what type of scarabeo (beetle) this is, and why it has such extraordinarily long antenne?

    Salve,

I have been on holiday last week and have just returned home and would like to respond, even if it is toooooo late!

Italy and italians to my mind are:

    Very proud people (rightly so)
Autoironia (I do not know what this is in english, but I have found that very charming when I visited italy)
    Ancient country with wonderful history
More agriculturally minded than I thought
    wonderful cooks

Ciao a tutti, mia suocera mi ha mandato questa risposta via e-mail:

    Dear Serena,

The Beetle is Carabus intricatus L. It is from the ground beetle family (Carabidae) and is a common central European species which is also found in G.B. Size 24-28mm.

If anyone is interested I found this forum about Mediterranean nature, in which our beetle is discussed, with a bit of Italian humor!

Looks like the following – http://www.naturephoto-cz.com/small-white-marmorated-long-horned-beetle:monochamus-sutor-photo-5425.html.

I also have a picture with one of these from a trip to Italy a number of years ago.
