Lucky Number Seven – Part 3: Amber’s Antics Posted by on Sep 29, 2014 in Italian Language

Those of you who follow our blog will have read about the latest addition to our household, little Amber: Part 1 – Lost and Found and Part 2 – Mittens for Kittens.  The first two posts were written in Italian with an English translation. Today, however, we’ve decided to do things the other way round in order to show how to translate English into an Italian that sounds natural, and not like something taken directly from an Italian grammar book, or an online translation program. So, here’s part three of our story:

Amber’s Antics

This is really comfortable – questo sì che è comodo!

Amber’s territory is expanding day by day. She’s gradually exploring all the accessible nooks and crannies of our house. About 80 per cent of our floor space has been conquered, including the dark and scary pantry.

What’s limiting Amber right now is verticality, especially the going up bit. She has no problem dropping down off low surfaces, such as the sofa, and occasionally has an unexpected fall when trying to scratch behind her ear on the edge of the table!

You see, I told you that I’d be able to climb up on the stone!

Yes, for little Amber getting up onto things is a big challenge that requires both skill and creativity. It also provides us humans with hours of entertainment! This is my favourite of Amber’s antics:

An Adventure with Geoff’s Trousers!

Serena and I are sitting on the sofa watching a film and Amber is exploring the living room floor. But now she’s tired, and wants to snuggle up with us … way up there on the sofa. This is where the fun begins …

So dear readers, do you like my lovely scarf?Allora cari lettori, vi piace la mia bella sciarpa?

She scrambles up onto my foot and, after a bit of investigation, finds a cosy looking cavern … my trouser leg. I have my long legs stretched out in front of me, and here Amber discovers a lovely bed, just inside my trousers near my left ankle.

My left ankle is now lovely and warm, and her long fluffy fur lightly tickles against my skin … very relaxing!

DSCN1841
No Amber, you don’t go inside my trousers! No Amber, dentro i pantaloni non ci si va!

However, I soon discover that Amber’s journey is far from over. After a few minutes’ rest she continues her way up inside my baggy jeans, pausing every now and then for a nap. “This could be tricky” I say to myself, “Those little claws …” But amber is very considerate, and she’s in no big hurry, after all it’s warm and cosy in there.

“How will it all end?” you’re wondering. “Will Amber conquer Trouser Leg Tunnel? Will Geoff end up at the Accident and Emergency ward?”

“Come andrà a finire?” vi starete chiedendo. “Riuscirà Ambra a conquistare Tunnel Gamba dei Pantaloni? Finirà al Pronto Soccorso Geoff?

Well … it all ended with me having to open my belt and unzip my trousers for an ‘extraction’, which was carried out by Serena.

Ebbene …

Now, I know that the previous paragraph, taken out of context, could be easily misunderstood. So, let me just remind you that it was Amber the kitten that had to be extracted. A task that was severely hampered by the fact that both Serena and I were in tears of laughter.

      A presto

    Amicizie

  5. andreas:

Che Ambra e voi stiate bene

  6. Robin:

    Salve Serena/Geoff
Thank you for this translation. Translating into Italian is difficult so please do do more of these. I was confused by the use of SIA in this translation. Can you explain? I’ve only ever translated both as “tutte le due”. How does SIA work here?

    • Geoff:

@Robin Salve Robin, have you seen yesterday’s blog: https://blogs.transparent.com/italian/my-name-is-magra/? It’s another English to Italian translation.

As for the use of ‘sia’, firstly a little correction: we say “tutti e due” (masculine) or “tutte e due” (feminine), not “tutte le due”, as you wrote, http://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/tutti-e-due-tutte-e-due_%28La_grammatica_italiana%29/. Tutti/e e due literally means both of them, tutti/e e tre = all three of them, tutti/e quattro = all four of them etc.

The most common way of expressing the concept ‘both X and Y’ is by using the construction sia X che Y, or sia X sia Y’. e.g. ieri è stato un giorno sia freddo che nuvoloso, lui è una persona sia gentile sia umile.

I hope that helps to clarify things for you.

      alla prossima, Geoff
