Dear readers, I hope I didn’t send you all to sleep with my last two posts, So Sleepy and Ninna Nanna? Well if I did, let’s hope this blog will wake you all up again, because today we’re going to have a look a some of the vocabulary that we use when we talk about waking and getting up:

svegliare = to wake somebody up

stamattina Bella la gatta ci ha svegliato alle otto precise = this morning Bella the cat woke us up exactly at eight o’clock

Mario sta dormendo così profondamente che neanche una bomba lo sveglierebbe = Mario is sleeping so deeply that not even a bomb would wake him up

non la svegliare! = don’t wake her up

 

svegliarsi = to wake (oneself) up (n.b. the ending of the past participle changes according to gender and number)

stamattina ci siamo svegliati alle otto in punto = this morning we woke up at eight o’clock on the dot

scusa il ritardo, mi sono svegliato tardi = sorry I’m  not on time, I woke up late

 

alzarsi = to get up (n.b. the ending changes according to gender and number)

ieri mattina Geoff si è dovuto alzare molto presto = yesterday morning Geoff had to get up very early

se potessi, d’inverno non mi alzerei mai = if I could, I would never get up in the winter

dato che non devi andare a lavorare domani potrai alzarti tardi  = since you don’t have to go to work tomorrow you’ll be able to get up late

Mimì la Gatta dice: “Dai, Serena, alzati! voglio i croccantini!” = Mimì the Cat says: “Come on, Serena, get up! I want some cat biscuits"!”

 

buttare giù dal letto = to throw/drag out of bed

questa notte Smokey il gatto ci ha buttato giù dal letto alle tre perché voleva uscire = last night Smokey the cat dragged us out of bed at three a.m. because he wanted to go out

se non ti alzi immediatamente ti butto giù dal letto a forza = if you don’t get up immediately I’ll throw you out of the bed

 

aprire gli occhi = to open one’s eyes

stamattina avevo un sonno tale che non riuscivo ad aprire gli occhi = this morning I was so sleepy that I couldn’t open my eyes

 

la sveglia = the alarm

ieri mattina la sveglia non ha suonato = yesterday morning the alarm didn’t ring

metto la sveglia per le sei e mezza, va bene? = I’m setting the alarm for half past six, okay?

 

essere sveglio, a, i, e = to be awake (n.b. the ending changes according to gender and number)

Serena, sei sveglia? = Serena, are you awake?

Geoff, sei sveglio? = Geoff, are you awake?

stamattina alle cinque le ragazze  erano già sveglie = this morning at five o’clock the girls were already awake

 

rimanere sveglio, a, i, e = to remain/stay awake (n.b. the ending changes according to gender and number)

sono rimasta sveglia fino alle due della mattina = I remained awake until two o’clock in the morning

 

tenere sveglio, a, i, e = to keep awake (n.b. the ending changes according to gender and number)

il temporale mi ha tenuto sveglio tutta la notte = the thunderstorm kept me awake all night
