  1. Nathan:

    Ciao Serena,

Is the kitchen sink a “lavello” and a bathroom sink “lavabo” or are the words interchangeable? Grazie in anticipo.

  2. Natalino:

    Salve Serena,

Is FON dialect for asciugacapelli – or a misprint?

  3. andreas:

    Salve, Serena!

  5. Serena:

Ciao Nathan, Yes that’s correct, but in everyday speech we use ‘lavandino’ for the bathroom sink or wash basin, I used ‘lavabo’ in my blog because it is the more technical name. When we moved my parents to their new apartment recently, we had to buy a new sink for their kitchen and the big plumbing supply store that we bought it from referred to it us a lavello, as distinct from lavabo or lavandino. You might also be interested to know, given your Tuscan heritage, that in Toscana the kitchen sink is commonly called ‘’l’acquaio’.

By the way, I’ve just published the first of my blogs on contemporary Italian singers/musicians. Hope you enjoy it.

    A presto, Serena

  6. Serena:

    Salve Natalino,

The word FON is the Italian adaptation of the German word Fohn (sorry, I can’t write it properly with my keyboard, it needs two dots on the letter o), which is the name of a warm wind that blows in the Alps. This word was adopted as the trademark for a type of hairdryer, although the correct name is, as you say, ‘asciugacapelli’. However the word Fon, being much shorter, is more widely used.

    A presto da Serena

  7. Serena:

  9. Jeannet:

Serena, mille grazie, Darmi alla studio l’italiano alla bell e meglio
    attendo a migliore.
