Based on a True Story! Here’s a bit of useful library jargon for you in the form of my memory of our first visit to our local library.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The setting: a small public library on the first floor of a semi derelict XVII century building hidden in a desolate part of a sleepy Italian town.<\/span><\/p>\n

The characters: Geoff, Serena, and the Librarian, an attractive lady wearing high heels, dazzling jewellery, make-up and an amazing outfit, far from the stereotypical image of the librarian.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Serena: “Buongiorno, vorremmo prendere in prestito dei libri.”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Good morning, we would like to borrow some books.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria, tirando fuori un enorme registro: “Certo, se mi date i vostri dati vi registro subito.”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian, getting out an enormous registry book: “Certainly, if you give me your data, I\u2019ll register you straight away.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Serena: “E la tessera?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “What about the library card?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria: “Non abbiamo la tessera, registriamo tutto su questo libro.”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian: “We don\u2019t have a library card, we record everything in this book.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoff: “Che genere di libri avete?”<\/strong>
\nGeoff: “What kind of books do you have?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria: “Abbiamo narrativa italiana e un po\u2019 di narrativa straniera, poi abbiamo \u2026”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian: “We have Italian fiction and a bit of foreign fiction, then we have \u2026”<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoff, interrompendola speranzoso: “Avete libri in inglese?”<\/strong>
\nGeoff, interrupting her hopeful: “Do you have books in English?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria: “No, abbiamo romanzi di autori inglesi e americani, ma tradotti in italiano. Infatti, tutta la narrativa straniera \u00e8 tradotta in italiano.”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian: “No, we have novels by English and American authors, but translated into Italian. In fact, all the foreign fiction is translated into Italian.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoff, deluso: “Che peccato!”<\/strong>
\nGeoff, disappointed: “What a pity!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Serena: “Per quanto tempo possiamo tenere i libri?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “How long can we keep the books for?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria: “Li potete tenere per un mese.”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian: “You can keep them for a month.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Serena: “Avete dei film o della musica?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Do you have any films or music?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria: “Abbiamo dei film in DVD.”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian: “We have some movies on DVD.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Serena: “Oh! dove sono?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Oh! where are they?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria: “Sono nella stanza dei bambini, ora vi faccio vedere.”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian: “They are in the children\u2019s room, I\u2019ll show you.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2026 attraversiamo diverse sale e salette con resti di affreschi sui soffitti, e finalmente arriviamo davanti ad una vetrinetta.<\/strong>
\n\u2026 we pass through several halls and smaller rooms with the remains of frescoes on the ceilings, and we finally arrive in front of a glass cabinet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoff: “Ma sono chiusi a chiave, non si riesce a vedere niente!”<\/strong>
\nGeoff: “But they are locked, we can\u2019t see anything!”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria: “S\u00ec, dei ragazzini ne hanno rubati alcuni, per cui abbiamo dovuto chiuderli. Ecco la chiave, quando avete finito me la riportate.”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian: “Yes, some kids stole some, therefore we had to lock them up. Here\u2019s the key, when you finish bring it back to me.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Director,<\/a>

Director, we’ve installed the new anti-theft device.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Serena: “Quanti DVD si possono prendere alla volta?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “How many DVDs can we borrow at a time?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria: “Due DVD \u2026 per una settimana.”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian: “Two DVDs \u2026 for a week.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoff, curiosando in giro: “Vedo che ci sono dei computer nell\u2019altra stanza. Si possono usare? C\u2019\u00e8 l\u2019internet?”<\/strong>
\nGeoff, snooping around: “I see there are some computers in the other room. Can we use them? Is there an internet connection?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria: “S\u00ec, potete usare l\u2019internet per sessioni di trenta minuti.”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian: “Yes, you can use the internet for thirty minutes sessions.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Serena: “Bisogna pagare per l\u2019internet?”<\/strong>
\nSerena: “Do we have to pay for the internet?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Bibliotecaria: “No, \u00e8 gratis. Per\u00f2 prima dovete portarmi la fotocopia di un documento e firmare un modulo sull\u2019uso corretto dell\u2019internet.”<\/strong>
\nLibrarian: “No, it\u2019s free. However, first you must bring me a photocopy of a document and sign a form on the correct use of the internet.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoff: “Okay, grazie infinite, penso che per adesso scegliamo un bel film”<\/strong>
\nGeoff, “Okay, thanks a lot, I’ll think we’ll choose a nice film for now”<\/span><\/p>\n

We choose a film and take it to the checkout desk where the librarian writes it all down in yet another enormous registry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geoff e Serena: “Grazie mille! Arrivederci!”<\/strong>
\nGeoff and Serena: “Thank you very much! Good bye!”<\/span><\/p>\n
